Pakistan has quietly become the largest country in the world to import solar panels.
According to the report of British energy think tank "Amber", Pakistan imported more solar panels than all other countries in 2024
The report said that Pakistan imported 17 gigawatt solar panels in 2024 alone.
According to the report, Pakistan's solar imports are surprising because it did not happen under any global investment, national program or massively organized project but made possible through personal efforts of consumers.
The report says the majority of demand for solar panels is towards domestic consumers, small businesses and businesses who want affordable and reliable energy compared to expensive and uncertain government electricity.
According to experts, Pakistan's solar panel imports in 2024 alone make up about half of the total demand for electricity across the country.
