Protecting Wetlands: SALU Khairpur Seminar Calls for Urgent Action in Pakistan.

Deputy Conservator of Wildlife Adnan Hamid Khan and Sindh Wildlife Department’s Mir Akhtar Hussain Talpur Highlight Wetlands Conservation at SALU Seminar, Chief Guest VC Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk

Press Release
26-9-2025

The Department of Zoology at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) hosted a significant Seminar to mark World Wetlands Day, rallying experts, faculty, and students around the global theme, “Protecting Wetlands for our common future.”

The event, held at the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Chair on campus, aimed to raise awareness about the critical role wetlands play in biodiversity, sustainable development, and the region's ecological future.

Presiding over the ceremony as the Chief Guest, the Vice-Chancellor of SALU, Meritorious Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, underscored the national and local importance of these ecosystems. He revealed that Pakistan is home to 112 significant wetland sites, with 30 located in Sindh, 17 in Punjab, 22 in Balochistan, and 12 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

“It is our responsibility to protect these wetlands as they are essential for our survival and the existence of species,” Dr. Khushk stated. He highlighted concerning local examples, noting that while Manchhar Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Asia, it faces challenges, and Haleji Lake, a renowned bird sanctuary, is now polluted.

The Vice-Chancellor drew a direct link between wetlands and human welfare, stating, “The day the dolphin no longer exists, the water will not be useful for us.” He called upon the experts and students in the Department of Zoology to lead conservation efforts and proposed a novel awareness idea: “Why not involve everyone by having them use ‘wetlands’ or ‘dolphin’ in their social media IDs? It shows a sense of ownership.”

Dr. Khushk also set a goal for the university, urging it to play a role in increasing the number of Pakistan's wetlands recognized under the Ramsar Convention from the current 19.

A panel of resource persons provided detailed expert insights. Mr. Adnan Hamid Khan, Deputy Conservator of Wildlife, Sukkur, elaborated on the 2025 theme, explaining that wetlands conserve biodiversity by providing essential habitats and ecosystem services. He delivered a sobering statistic, reporting long-term losses of 54% to 57% in some regions of the world.

Mir Akhtar Hussain Talpur from the Sindh Wildlife Department, Sukkur, focused on the unique Indus Blind Dolphin. He noted its historical significance and current threats, including illegal fishing and water pollution, and emphasized the need for dedicated awareness and protection programs.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Department of Zoology, Dr. Javed Ahmed Ujjan, welcomed the guests and commended the Vice-Chancellor for promoting a culture of quality education and research at SALU.

The Guest of Honor, Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Ali Jakhrani, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, shed light on the damage caused to wetlands by continuous human activities, stressing their fundamental importance for life on Earth.

Dr. Zaib Un Nisa Memon, the Focal Person for the event, presented on the benefits of wetlands and highlighted that an estimated 35% of the world's wetlands have been lost since 1970.

The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Safadar Ujjan.

The workshop concluded with the Vice-Chancellor distributing certificates of appreciation to the guest speakers, faculty members, and participating students.

The event was attended by a large number of faculty members including Dr Fakhra Soomro, Dr Paras Sommro, Dr Majeeda Ruk, Dr Wali Muhammad Mangrio, Dr Khadim Hussain Memon, Dr Shaista Pathan, Dr Sajjad Larik, Dr Khadim Hussain Memon
and students, signaling strong engagement with the critical environmental issues discussed.

SALU Scholar’s Research on Bankers’ Over-Qualification Declared a Success at PhD Seminar

Press Release :
25-9-2025

Vice Chancellor Meritorious Professor Dr Yousuf Khushk presided the Seminar ,Dr Irshad Hussain Sariki NCBA&E Sub campus RYK and Dr Nawaz Ahmed from SBBU, Benazirabad participated as external Examiner .
A doctoral research seminar at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, concluded successfully, with scholars and experts praising the study's quality and its potential for practical application.

The seminar featured the research of scholar Abdul Basit Solangi, who presented his PhD thesis titled, “Perceived Over-Qualification and Work Engagement: The Moderating Role of Emotional Intelligence.”

The event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk. In his address, Dr. Khushk emphasized that scholarly work must ultimately benefit the university and society.“Good work is here. The basic thing is to contribute to society,” he stated.
Dr khushk proposed a novel idea, suggesting that for such industry-specific research, “we should also invite the concerned people on which the research is done… and make them part of statutory bodies like the board of studies.” He commended the scholar's work and declared the seminar successful.

The study, supervised by Dr. Saifullah Shaikh and co-supervised by Dr. Qamar Abbas Mangi from the Institute of Commerce & Management, investigated the impact of employees feeling overqualified for their roles on their work engagement within the banking sector. A key finding was the significant moderating effect of Emotional Intelligence on this relationship.

The research hypotheses were strongly supported by data collected from 400 banking sector employees. The results confirmed a significant negative relationship between perceived overqualification and work engagement. Crucially, the study found that emotional intelligence acts as a buffer, weakening this negative impact.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Wahid Bux Jatoi was present in seminar
Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Dr. Minhoon Khan Laghari, clarified that these seminars are designed to guide scholars rather than solely evaluate them. He praised Mr. Solangi’s work and presentation, formally recommending him for the award of the PhD degree.

Incharge Director of the Institute of Commerce, Professor Dr. Ameer Hussain Shar, remarked that the research is a valuable “policy document” that can be useful for policymakers in the banking industry.

The supervisor, Professor Dr. Saifullah Shaikh, assured that all suggestions provided by the experts would be integrated into the final draft of the thesis before submission.

The Focal Person for Post Graduate Studies (PGS), Dr. Munir Ahmed Qazi conducted the proceedings of the event.

Prof. Dr. Ali Hassan Halepoto, Dr. Ghulam Akbar, Dr. Younus Malik, Dr. Nawaz, Dr. Irshad Hussain, Dr. Farhan Soomro, Dr. Humera Shaikh, Imran Sommro, and Waseem Kalhoro, Shahid Hussain and others were present on the occasion.

The seminar highlighted SALU’s commitment to producing research that addresses contemporary issues in the professional world and contributes meaningfully to academic knowledge and societal development.
