Pakistan has emerged as a leading global producer of potatoes, yielding over eight million tonnes annually. This surge in production can be attributed to expanded agricultural land utilization and improved farming techniques. Over the past three years, the country has witnessed a remarkable 35 percent increase in potato output.
While China holds the top position in potato production, Pakistan follows as the ninth largest producer globally, trailing behind countries like India, Ukraine, Russia, and the USA. The majority of Pakistan's potato cultivation, approximately 80 percent, occurs in Punjab province, which has experienced a notable uptick in potato farming activity in recent times.
Maqsood Ahmad Jutt, President of the Potato Growers Association, views this uptrend in production as a noteworthy accomplishment for the agricultural sector. He highlights Pakistan's successful potato export endeavors, with key destinations including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the UAE, the Russian Federation, and Qatar.
Although there was a decline in the value of potato exports between 2015 and 2019 despite an increase in export volume, Pakistan's overall potato exports have demonstrated a steady 3 percent annual growth rate.
