Arshad Nadeem set a new Olympic record on Thursday and ended Pakistan’s 32-year wait for success at the Games by clinching the coveted gold medal in the men’s javelin final in Paris.

The Mian Channu-born was slow off the blocks, registering a no-throw on his first attempt of the night but shocked everyone on his second attempt, with a monstrous 92.97-m throw, which the rest of the field could not even come close for the rest of the competition.

Behind Nadeem on the podium was rival and reigning champion Neeraj Chopra, who also had a foul throw on his first attempt before eventually settling for a silver medal finish with an 89.45m throw on his second attempt.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters took home bronze, his first ever Olympic medal, with an 88.54m throw.

Nadeem’s throw was Pakistan’s first individual gold medal, first track and field medal and the second time a South Asian has had a podium finish in track and field.

It also shattered the previous Olympic record of 90.57m, set by the Netherlands’ Andreas Thorkildsen at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

The throw now stands as the sixth longest throw ever, and the best in the world this year

Internet services provided by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) suffered disruption across the country on Wednesday, the company said.

“PTCL network is facing data outage in various cities due to which connectivity has been affected,” PTCL spokesperson Amir Pasha told Dawn.com.

“Our teams are actively working to resolve and rectify the issue at the earliest,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) spokesperson Malahat Obaid attributed the disruption to a “fault in the PTCL system”.

“Internet/broadband users may experience degraded services during peak hours,” she said, explaining that the disruption may affect PTCL users and those internet service providers using PTCL’s bandwidth.

The spokesperson added teams were currently fixing the fault while the PTA was monitoring the situation till internet/broadband services were back to normal.

Dr Shahid Farooq Alvi, president of the Pakistan Telecommunication Access Provider Association (PTAPA), also confirmed to Dawn.com that PTCL’s internet services “all over Pakistan” were not working.

He said PTCL provided 70 per cent of the internet services in the country.

“Companies were also not informed about when the system would start providing internet,” the PTAPA president said.

Global internet monitor Netblocks said “live network data [showed] a nation-scale disruption to internet connectivity in Pakistan”.

“Metrics show national connectivity at 24pc of ordinary levels, corroborating user reports of a widespread outage,” it said in a post on X.

The upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, just five months away, has yet to confirm its host country. Pakistan is the official host, but concerns over India’s participation have left the organizers in limbo. Pakistan is eager for India to take part, as their involvement is crucial for the tournament’s success.

Due to the strained political relations between India and Pakistan, the two countries have not engaged in any bilateral cricket matches since the 2008 Asia Cup. Bilateral ties were further severed following Pakistan’s 2012-2013 tour of India, leading to an unpleasant situation between the neighboring nations.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly stated that they will not concede to the demands regarding the tournament. has tasked the ICC with persuading the BCCI to send the Indian national team to Pakistan, but this may prove challenging. If a resolution is not found soon, there is a risk that India could withdraw from the tournament.

India’s potential withdrawal from the tournament could lead to financial losses for both the ICC and the PCB. Additionally, the PCB fears that other cricket boards may also refuse to play in Pakistan if India pulls out of the ICC event. However, amidst these growing concerns, the PCB has received some reassuring news – the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) CEO, Richard Gould, has expressed support for the PCB’s bid to host the tournament in Pakistan.

GWADAR/QUETTA: At least three people are dead and several injured after participants of a Balochistan Yakjehti Committee (BYC) protest clashed with security personnel in different areas of the province, on Sunday.

But despite roadblocks put in place by the authorities, a large number of people managed to make their way from across the province to Gwadar’s Marine Drive for the Baloch Rajee Muchi (Baloch National Gathering).

Sources told Dawn that two people were killed and as many injured after a convoy was stopped by the security forces at the Talar check-post. Officials claimed that security forces were trying to defend themselves against a mob that reportedly attacked the checkpost.

Additionally, one person lost their life and eight people were injured in clashes that erupted after authorities used teargas in an attempt to disperse people gathered on Marine Drive. At least 20 people were also arrested.

The death toll was confirmed by health authorities in Gwadar. “We have received three bodies and eight injured persons in the hospital,” a senior official told Dawn, adding that two of the injured were shifted to Turbat.

Dawn tried to contact Balochistan Home Minister Ziaullah Langove and Provincial Spokesperson Shahid Rind, but due to a communications blackout, they and other relevant officials could not be reached for comment.

Later, addressing the gathering in Gwadar, BYC leader Dr Mahrang Baloch and others vowed not to abandon their struggle for the rights of the Baloch people and the protection of the province’s resources.

Barzakh is a Zee Zindagi series. It is directed and written by Asim Abbasi who is also famously known for his film Cake and his Zee Zindagi web series Churails. Barzakh cast features Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Muhammad Fawad Khan, Khushhal Khan, Uzma Beg and Salman Shahid. The series has been shot in the beautiful locations of northern areas of Pakistan.

So far, three episodes of Barzakh have been published on YouTube. The first episode has garnered 2.2 million views, the second episode 776 thousand views, and the third episode 288 thousand views. Barzakh’s views have massively decreased after the release of the later episodes because many Pakistanis revealed that the series didn’t resonate well with them because it promotes something that is against the Islamic teachings.

Well, Barzakh is facing severe public backlash for its bold narrative. Viewers are angry on the Pakistani actors who worked in Barzakh which openly promotes the LGBTQ agenda that clearly goes against Islam. The series is also receiving criticism due to the involvement of Indian makers. Fans feel that these makers are deliberately promoting the same themes which they are promoting in their own dramas and films. Fans are of the view that if Pakistani creators will continue to collaborate with Indian drama makers, Pakistani dramas will also see a decline like Indian dramas. A fan said, “Fawad Khan does these characters to make his Indian fans happy”

Two Japanese climbers went missing while attempting to scale the 8,611-metre-tall K2 peak, the second-highest mountain in the world, on Saturday morning.

Shigar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Waliullah Falahi told Dawn.com that Japanese climbers Kazuya Hirade and Kenro Nakajima fell down from a height of 7,500m, west of K2.

He said Pakistan Army helicopters conducted a search operation in the area, adding that two military helicopters flew from Skardu and searched for the climbers at the peak.

He said they spotted the fallen climbers below the 100m mark but it was observed that the men had no movement.

The DC said the helicopters could not land or hover at the altitude, adding that a ground rescue team would be prepared to retrieve the two men.

He said it was not known if either of them was alive or dead.

Meanwhile, 12 Pakistanis, one Russian and two Nepalese climbers summited Broad Peak (8,051m) on Saturday morning in a short window with good weather.

During summit pushes at K2 and Gasherbrum-I, climbers reached a decisive stage days before the end of climbing season at the Karakoram range, aiming to reach the summits on Sunday.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Thursday that she expressed concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting at the White House.

“I made clear my serious concern about the dire humanitarian situation there, with over 2 million people facing high levels of food insecurity and half a million people facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity,” Harris told reporters after the closed-door meeting with Netanyahu.

The meeting came a day after Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the US Congress, where he claimed that the conflict in Gaza has “one of the lowest ratios of combatants to non-combatant casualties in the history of urban warfare”.

Harris said that what has happened in Gaza over the past nine months was “devastating”.

“The images of dead children and desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third, or fourth time.

“We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent,” she added.

Karachi police on Friday said they have so far arrested 17 suspects after five people were killed and two others were critically injured in a shootout between members of the Bugti clan last night.

Two groups, led by Fahad Ahmed Nawaz Bugti and Ali Haider Bugti, had engaged in a gunfight on late Thursday night near the former’s residence in Defence Housing Authority’s (DHA) Khayaban-i-Nishat.

The clash resulted in the killing of 50-year-old Fahad — a nephew of slain Baloch chieftain Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti — while Ali Haider, also a maternal nephew of the Bugti chieftain, was injured.

Stating that four others were also killed, Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) South, Asad Raza, told Dawn.com that two people were injured, not three as previously reported.

“Earlier today, police took action in DHA, detaining 17 individuals belonging to the Bugti clan, including two gunmen, DIG Raza said.

He added that the suspects belonged to both supposed rival gangs within the Bugti family.

Scientists have revealed in their new study that time passed slower in the early age of the universe — about 12.43 billion years ago — than the current as astronomers used quasars as a clock to determine and measure how time passed in the early universe, reported Reuters.

Quasars are tremendously active supermassive black holes billions of times more massive than our sun, usually residing at the centres of large galaxies.

They pull matter into themselves as they have immense gravitational force, unleashing torrents of radiation including jets of high-energy particles, while a glowing disk of highly charged matter spins around them.

The study was conducted by observing the brightness of 190 quasars across the universe dating to about 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang — an event which is theorised to give birth to the universe.

The study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Scientists compared the luminosity of the quasars at various wavelengths with the ones of today, finding that certain fluctuations that take place in a particular amount of time today did so five times more slowly in the most ancient quasars.

According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, time and space are intertwined and the universe has been expanding outward in all directions since the Big Bang.

Astrophysicist Geraint Lewis of the University of Sydney in Australia, the lead author of the study, said this continual expansion explains how time flowed more slowly earlier in the universe's history relative to today.

It does not mean everything was moving in slow motion. A second would feel like a second to someone if had existed then however, from the perspective of a person today, a second back then would feel like today’s five.

"In modern physics, time is a complicated thing," Lewis said

"Dr Who had it right, that time is best described as 'wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.' This means that we don't really understand time and its limitation, and some things are still not ruled out: time travel, warp drives, etc. The future could be very exciting, though maybe not."

By looking at faraway objects, scientists peer back in time because of how long it takes for light to travel through space.

Scientists previously documented time dilation dating to roughly 7 billion years ago, based on observations of star explosions called supernovas.

Already knowing the time, it takes for today's supernovas to brighten and fade, they studied these explosions in the past — those at great distances from Earth — and found that these events unfolded more slowly than from our time perspective.
