China to conduct clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines in Pakistan.
A major Chinese pharmaceutical company has invited the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, to collaborate in conducting clinical trials of its recently developed inactivated vaccine for Covid-19 in Pakistan, it emerged on Wednesday.

The offer was made in a letter sent to NIH Executive Director Maj Gen Dr Aamer Ikram by the general manager of China Sinopharm International Corp., Li Can, who expressed the hope that "a successful clinical trial in Pakistan will make it one of [the] first few countries for the launch of a Covid-19 vaccine".

While confirming that he had received the letter on Wednesday, Dr Ikram told Dawn.com that although no action has so far been taken, the collaboration could be "a great thing for Pakistan".

PAKISTAN DAY

On a crisp spring day in 1940, under the shadow of the Badshahi Mosque, in a city that has been at the heart of the Muslim subcontinent for centuries, a group of men resolved to create a separate homeland for their people.

Surrounded by leaders of the All-India Muslim League and the Khaksars, Muhammed Ali Jinnah took to the stage in Minto Park to address the thousands in attendance, laying down the unequivocal demand for Pakistan. The Lahore Resolution, signed the next day on 23rd of March, became the bedrock on which the struggle for Pakistan was built.

Today, on the exact spot where the founders of the nation once stood, stands a monument that not only commemorates that momentous occasion, but whose history mirrors the fortunes of the young, struggling nation. For the keen eyed, within the flowing white lines of Minar-e-Pakistan can be seen the vision of the new state, and the ideals meant to guide it.

Corona threat: Army comes in aid of civil admin
The Pakistan Army has come to the aid of civil administration to combat the threat of coronavirus as the Command and Control Centre announced the launch of a live national dashboard that will henceforth provide confirmed and authentic data and updates on the status of coronavirus in Pakistan.

According to latest reports, Pakistan now has 456 confirmed cases of COVID-19, their majority with a travel history. Sindh is the worst-affected province with 245 cases, followed by Balochistan (81), Punjab (78), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (23), Gilgit-Baltistan (21), Islamabad Capital Territory (7), and Azad Jammu andKashmir (1). There have been two confirmed deaths from the disease so far. The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Health Dr Zafar Mirza, Minister for Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and Director General ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar announced activation of the national data platform at a joint press conference held at the Command and Control Centre, with no media presence and only the state-run television channel recording the proceedings.

Major General Babar Iftikhar said the armed forces are fully prepared and activated to assist civil institutions to combat coronavirus across the country. “May Allah Almighty prevent the Pakistani nation from coronavirus pandemic. Pakistani armed forces is fully prepared and activated. We are utilising all resources along with civil institutions and in contact with the Centre and provinces to stop the spread of the virus,” he said.

“Army Chief has ordered all formations to provide maximum assistance to the civil administration across the country. All institutions of the armed forces are joint monitoring the developments in the affected areas,” he said, adding, “The military troops are also assisting civil administration for the construction of quarantine centres besides checking people on entrance spots. Six major airports are opened from March 21’s morning and personnel from armed forces are helping out airport managements in screening process.”

The DG ISPR said security forces and its sub-ordinate institutions have continued implementation of orders given by the higher authorities on land routes. The military spokesman detailed that a medical team of all three armed forces including Army, Navy and Air Force has been formed and sensitive surgeries are being made in medical facilities.

“Load management is being made in the medical facilities of the armed forces. A team of military troops is in contact with civil administration at Karachi’s Expo Centre and also assisted the construction of a mega quarantine camp with the capacity of 1,200 persons in Multan. Moreover, a team of specialist doctors from Pakistan Army visited Dera Ghazi Khan,” elaborated Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar.

He stressed the need of carrying out joint efforts on the national level to fight the pandemic. The spokesman also highlighted the importance of information in the fight against coronavirus.

“The scientists of armed forces are providing assistance to manufacture sanitizers and troops are being sent to the quarantined places. We have finalised crisis and risk management strategy to defeat the virus. The nation’s confidence in Pakistani armed forces is a precious asset,” he said.

China’s Virus Center Has No New Cases After Two-Month Ordeal

Wuhan Reports No New Virus Cases After Almost Two-Month Lockdown
The Chinese province at the center of the coronavirus outbreak reported no new infections for the first time since the pathogen emerged more than two months ago, marking a turning point in an epidemic that’s infected almost 81,000 Chinese and threatens to push the world’s second-largest economy into its first quarterly contraction in decades.

The milestone for Hubei province comes as China struggles to get back on its feet after being flattened by a disease that exploded out of the city of Wuhan in late January. It’s grappling with the aftermath of containment measures that have wrought enormous social and economic damage, most of all in the 60-million province of Hubei, which is still under mass quarantine.

What Europe, U.S. Can Learn From Asia’s Months-Long Virus Battle

And with the virus accelerating its spread worldwide and people within China resuming work and social activities, a second wave of infections is almost guaranteed, say experts, given how contagious the pathogen is and how easily it slips past country borders.

As China’s Virus Cases Reach Zero, Experts Warn of Second Wave

Indeed, even as Hubei’s numbers have dwindled to zero, China is facing another concern as imported cases continue to add to the country’s tally of infections. The National Health Commission reported 34 new cases for March 18, all of them patients who brought the disease from other countries.

China should watch out for “very infectious” cases among travelers entering China from other countries, and some show no symptoms at first, prominent Chinese infectious disease expert Zhong Nanshan said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Globally, the coronavirus has sickened over 211,000 and killed 8,700. The outbreak has accelerated in the rest of the world, cutting a particularly deadly swathe in countries like Italy. Entire countries are closing their borders, canceling schools and shutting restaurants. Music festivals and sports events have been postpones, while travel and supply chains are disrupted. Economists see $2.7 trillion being wiped from the world’s gross domestic product.

The Costs of Containment

As its new cases dropped to zero on Thursday from a peak of 15,000 a month ago, Hubei also partially lifted the mass quarantine that’s been in place since Jan. 23, allowing some residents in lower-risk areas to leave the province for work. According to local media reports, people have to get a “green code” certification proving they are in good health in order to leave.

Hubei’s mass quarantine, which encompasses Wuhan and surrounding cities, was aimed at sealing off the region where the virus first emerged from the rest of the country and world. The unprecedented and draconian measures are now being replicated by some of the highly-infectious countries.
