Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar announced Wednesday that he was stepping down as the party's secretary general after serving in the position for the last 17 months.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said he would also no longer remain a part of the PTI's core committee. He clarified, however, that he was not quitting the party.

"Given the current situation [...] after May 9, it is not personally possible for me to continue performing my party leadership duties," the former federal minister said.

"I am resigning as the secretary general of PTI and as the core committee member. One of the reasons why is [...] I am outspoken and I cannot issue personal statements if I holdanoffice."

Umar's press conference comes hours after he was released from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on the Islamabad High Court's (IHC) order.

The court had directed the PTI leader to submit an undertaking that he would not become a part of violent protests following his release.

Umar, along with other PTI leaders, was arrested hours after violent riots erupted across the country following party chairman Imran Khan's arrest on May 9 in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

He had been arrested under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

Declaring Umar's arrest null and void today, IHC's Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb told the PTI leader to "forget" his political career in case he deviated from the undertaking.

The court also directed him to delete two tweets.

After Khan was arrested from the IHC premises on May 9, enraged PTI supporters had launched violent protests, including attacks on the Lahore Corps Commanders House or Jinnah House and the General Headquarters entrance.

Consequently, the party has been under intense criticism in recent days. Thousands of workers have been arrested and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir has said that the legal process to try those involved in attacks on military installations under the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act has been started.

A slew of leaders has been leaving the PTI since the May 9 violence, including senior vice presidents Fawad Chaudhry and Shireen Mazari.

'Bid for party chairman?'
Following Umar's announcement journalists questioned whether Umar was going to make a bid for the party chairman position in the future, given that he had not quit the PTI.

HANGU: At least four Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel and two private security guards embraced martyrdom when militants attacked a gas plant in Tall Tehsil of Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said on Tuesday.

DSP Tall Irfan Khan told Geo News that terrorists attacked the private gas extraction plant in the mountainous region during which six security personnel lost their lives.

The police official said that a heavy contingent of police and Frontier Corps is conducting search operation in the area.

A foreign news agency reported that up to 50 militants attacked the plant in the Hangu district near the Afghan border.

No group has claimed responsibility.

The company did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Various militant factions, including the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), have operated out of remote mountains in the northwest for years, launching attacks on the security forces and infrastructure in their campaign against the state.

The National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution to condemn “shameless incidents” on May 9 and expressed solidarity with armed forces in the wake of attacks on martyrs’ monuments and defence installations almost across the country following Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest in a corruption case earlier this month.

The resolution tabled by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif backed the civil-military leadership's decision to try rioters under relevant laws of the country including the Pakistan Army Act.

It said the lower house of parliament “vehemently condemned the shocking, brazen, heart-wrenching and shameless incidents which took place in certain parts of the country on the 9th May 2023”.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 struck the offshore region of Northern California on Sunday, as reported by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The seismic event occurred at a depth of 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) beneath the surface. The quake sent tremors through the offshore area of Northern California, prompting concerns about the potential impact on coastal regions. EMSC, a leading authority on earthquake monitoring, provided details of the incident. This event serves as a reminder of the seismic activity prevalent in the region, emphasising the need for ongoing monitoring and preparedness efforts to ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is making last-ditch efforts with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to revive the stalled Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme, The News reported on Monday.

The hopes are diminishing each day mainly because the ongoing programme of $6.5 billion under the EFF will expire on June 30.

The parleys between Pakistan and the IMF continue for the completion of the ninth review, which was due on November 3 of last year. The formal negotiations started on January 31 when an IMF delegation visited Pakistan for in-person talks.

However, the two sides could not reach a consensus during the course of scheduled talks that ended on February 09. Since then, multiple online sessions have been held but the differences persist on conditions set by the Fund for the Staff Level Agreement (SLA).

If the SLA is not struck ahead of the upcoming budget for 2023-24, scheduled to be unveiled on June 9, the ongoing programme will face a failure.

“There are a couple of options left for moving forward. The first is by signing the SLA on an immediate basis and forwarding Pakistan’s request before the IMF Executive Board for approving the next tranche of $1 billion and also securing an extension in the EFF programme period by a few months in order to accomplish the 10th and 11th Reviews,” sources, privy to the background discussions told the publication.

The second option could be combining the 9th and 10th reviews and for Pakistan to share upcoming budgetary numbers with the IMF.

Then the SLA should be signed after the announcement of the budget and in case of its approval from parliament, the IMF’s Executive Board could approve combined tranches and also grant an extension to the EFF programme for accomplishing the 11th Review by July or August 2023.

“There are no easy options available; both sides will have to work out modalities for evolving consensus. But with the existing approach of maintaining the status quo, no breakthrough can be achieved,” said the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah launched on Sunday a fresh salvo at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

He criticised Mr Khan, saying, "Imran Khan is reaping the results of the actions taken during his tenure. Imran Khan has done nothing for the country except protest and sit-ins".

Accusing Mr Khan of introducing the "foul" language in politics, Mr Sanaullah said Mr Khan was "willing" to send his political opponents to jail.

"Mr Khan has reiterated that there will be a reaction if he is arrested", maintained Mr Sanaullah.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir has said that the legal process of trial against planners, instigators, abettors and perpetrators involved in the May 9 mayhem has commenced under Pakistan Army Act and Official Secret Act as per existing and established legal procedures derived from the Constitution.

The army chief's statement came as he visited Jinnah House and an army installation in Lahore, which were blatantly attacked and vandalised by “politically motivated” rioters, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a handout.

The COAS was also given a briefing on events of May 9 dubbed by the military as ‘Black Day’ — the day when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters ransacked and torched military installations across the country following the arrest of their leader Imran Khan in a graft case.

Addressing the garrison officers and soldiers at Corps Headquarters, Gen Munir emphasised that any action aimed at widening a gulf between people and the military was against the state.

"Army draws its strength from people and any effort to create wedge between the Army and the people of Pakistan is an act against the State which is neither tolerable nor condonable under any circumstances,” the army chief said.

"Hostile and inimical forces and their abettors have been trying hard to create confusion through fake news and propaganda but all such designs of the enemy will be defeated with the support of the nation, InshAllah,” he added.

Later, COAS also visited Services Hospital Lahore and inquired about the well-being of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ali Nasir Rizvi who was injured by “political miscreants” during the May 9 incident.

Gen Munir also visited Qurban Lines and met with police officials.

The COAS paid homage to the martyrs of police, appreciated the professionalism and restraint exercised by them during the May 9 riots, and assured the army’s full support to the law enforcement agencies for their capacity enhancement, intelligence sharing, and training.

The COAS laid a floral wreath at Martyrs' Monument and paid rich tribute to the Shuhada who sacrificed their lives for the motherland, read the statement.

Dubai, which is known for its ultramodern architecture, is hoping to get its own giant replica of the moon which is estimated to cost over £4 billion.

According to The Mirror, a Dubai resort plans on building a fake moon on top of a skyscraper.

Canadian entrepreneur Michael Henderson, who is the co-founder of the project, has planned to build the moon on top of a 30-metre building. The sphere would be 274 meters in length.

The project is called "Moon" and would provide an experience of visiting the space satellite while still being on Earth.

The fake moon would hopefully attract over 2.5 people annually and would bring revenue of over £1.5 billion in a year.

It is expected to cost £4.28 billion and will be funded by Moon World Resorts.

"We have the biggest 'brand' in the world. Eight billion people know our brand, and we haven’t even started yet," said Henderson.

There will be a resort inside the moon with a 4,000-room hotel, an arena with a 10,000 capacity, a nightclub and a wellness centre. Guests will also be able to experience what it feels like to walk on the moon through a "lunar colony".

The moon would also glow at night as a full, half or crescent moon.

Co-founders of the project, Henderson and Sandra G Matthews, said that it will "significantly impact every aspect of the UAE’s economy, including tourism".

"[It] will be the largest and most successful modern-day tourism project in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, doubling annual tourism visitations to Dubai based on its global appeal, brand awareness and unique multiple integrated offerings," they added.
