# Saudi Arabia Declares National Security a 'Red Line' After Yemen Port Strike

# # Coalition Targets Mukalla Port Over Alleged Weapons Shipments

Saudi Arabia has stated its national security is a "red line" it would defend, hours after a coalition it leads struck vehicles and cargo in Yemen that it said has been supplied by a foreign military to separatists in that country's south.

The coalition's "limited military operation" at Mukalla port in Yemen came days after it warned the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) group against taking military action in Hadramout province.

# # Yemen Names UAE as Supplier

Yemen's Saudi-backed presidential council has named the United Arab Emirates as the country that supplied the assistance to the STC that was targeted in the coalition's strike.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday that it hopes the UAE will take the necessary steps to preserve bilateral relations between Gulf Arab nations.

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki said two ships entered Mukalla port on Saturday and Sunday without coalition authorisation, disabled their tracking systems, and unloaded large quantities of weapons and combat vehicles "to support" the STC.

# # Yemen Orders UAE Forces Out

The Saudi-backed head of Yemen's presidential council, Rashad al-Alimi, said on Tuesday after the air strike that all forces of the UAE must leave Yemen within 24 hours.

In a televised address, al-Alimi framed the move as a sovereign requirement and renewed his praise for Saudi Arabia and the coalition for their support. The Yemeni leader also cancelled the joint defence agreement with the UAE, announced a 72-hour air, land and sea blockade, and declared a state of emergency for 90 days.

# # Details of the Strike

"Given the danger and escalation posed by these weapons … the coalition air forces carried out a limited military operation this morning targeting weapons and combat vehicles that had been unloaded from the two ships at the port of al-Mukalla," the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Two sources told the Reuters news agency that the strike specifically targeted the dock where the cargo had been unloaded. The coalition said there were no casualties or collateral damage and emphasised that the operation was conducted in accordance with international humanitarian law.

# # Regional Calls for De-escalation

The strike comes amid heightened tensions following an offensive earlier this month by the STC against Yemeni government troops backed by the coalition.

Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman Al Saud posted on X that the STC troops should "peacefully hand over" two regional governorates to the government. Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for "restraint and continued diplomacy, with a view to reaching a lasting solution".

# # Yemen's Complex Divisions

The STC was initially part of the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 against the Houthis, but the group later pursued self-rule in southern Yemen. Since 2022, the STC, which has previously received assistance from the UAE, has controlled southern territories outside Houthi areas under a Saudi-backed power-sharing arrangement.

In recent weeks, however, the STC has swept through swaths of the country, expelling other government forces and their allies.

China Launches Major Military Exercises Around Taiwan

"Justice Mission-2025" War Games Begin

China's military command announced on Monday it was deploying ground forces, naval vessels, aircraft and missile units around Taiwan for extensive military operations designed to deliver a "serious warning" against Taiwanese independence efforts and outside interference with the territory.

The maneuvers – named "Justice Mission-2025" – are intended to evaluate operational preparedness and capabilities for "blockade and control of key ports and critical areas," according to China's Eastern Theater Command. The command disclosed that weapons firing would occur across five designated maritime and aerial zones surrounding the island.

Taiwan's administration denounced the operations, characterizing them as "military intimidation," with its defense ministry stating it remained "fully on guard" and prepared to "take concrete action to defend the values of democracy and freedom."

# # Escalating Military Activities

Beijing has increased its military activities around the island over recent years, frequently staging large-scale operations during politically sensitive periods to signal its position – a pattern these current exercises seem to replicate.

Diplomatic tensions between China and Japan have persisted for weeks following the Japanese prime minister's statements regarding Taiwan. Additionally, Washington and Taipei revealed earlier this month what may rank among the largest American military transactions with the island in history.

Simultaneously, Taiwan's president has been advocating for passage of an unprecedented special defense budget – developments that have drawn Beijing's response.

# # Beijing's Territorial Position

The Chinese Communist Party regards Taiwan as its territory and has pledged to achieve reunification, by force if necessary.

"This exercise serves as a serious warning to 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and external interfering forces," Shi Yi spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command said, using what appeared to be a veiled reference to the US and its allies. "(It) is a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard national sovereignty and maintain national unity."

Additional commentary in Chinese state-controlled media proved more direct. During an interview broadcast on CCTV, military analyst Fu Nan referenced the American-Taiwanese weapons transaction when questioned about the timing of these drills, describing it as an "escalation" of "collusive actions."

Taiwan's presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo issued a statement declaring the drills "blatantly undermine the security and stability status quo of the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region" and "openly challenges international laws and order."

# # The $11.1 Billion Arms Package

The significant $11.1 billion arms deal between US and Taiwan includes HIMARS rocket systems, anti-tank and anti-armor missiles, loitering drones, howitzers and military software.

Washington recognizes the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China; it also acknowledges Beijing's position that Taiwan is part of China, but has never accepted the Chinese Communist Party's claim of sovereignty over the island.

America maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan, which have strengthened in recent years. Legal obligations require it to provide the island with means for self-defense, supplying defensive armaments.

# # Military Messaging and Timeline

The latest military operations announcement came with messaging targeting China's domestic audience, including imagery depicting arrows descending upon the island with the caption "Arrow of Justice, Control and Denial."

The duration of these war games remained unclear initially. Shi indicated that maritime and aerial forces would conduct combat readiness patrols starting December 29, while the command issued notification of maritime and airspace zone closures surrounding Taiwan for weapons firing on December 30 during daylight hours.

China Coast Guard also announced Monday it was starting law enforcement patrols in waters near Taiwan and two of its outlying islands.

# # Regional Tensions Rising

These Chinese drills emerge during a period of elevated attention on Taiwan within Beijing's diplomatic exchanges and internal political discussion, primarily because of its disputes with Japan.

Beijing has directed strong criticism toward its regional neighbor following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested her country could respond militarily if China were to move to take control of Taiwan by force – comments Beijing sees as a direct threat against its sovereignty.

Beijing views Taiwan as the fundamental "red line" in US-China relations, with Chinese authorities consistently expressing concern over the unofficial relationship between Taipei and Washington.

Beijing slammed the recent arms deal announced between the two, saying the move "infringes on China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

# # Taiwan's Defense Expansion

Taiwan has accelerated military acquisitions in recent years amid cross-strait tensions, with Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels appearing regularly around Taiwan alongside periodic large-scale exercises in surrounding waters and airspace.

Portions of latest deal, however, are expected to be paid for as part of an historic $40 billion special defense budget Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te proposed in late November, which has struggled to gain approval in Taiwan's opposition-controlled legislature.

Imran Khan and Wife Bushra Bibi Sentenced to 17 Years in Toshakhana-2 Case

**RAWALPINDI:** Former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been handed 17-year prison sentences by a special court in connection with the Toshakhana-2 case, which centers on the allegedly undervalued acquisition of luxury gifts from the state repository.

# # Background and Context

The conviction represents another chapter in the ongoing legal challenges facing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, who has remained incarcerated since August 2023. He is currently serving a 14-year term in a separate corruption case related to land dealings.

Since his removal from power in 2022, the PTI founder has been implicated in numerous cases spanning corruption allegations, anti-terrorism charges, and matters involving classified information. Both Khan and his party maintain that all charges lack merit and are driven by political motives.

# # Court Proceedings and Verdict

Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand delivered the ruling following 80 hearings held at Adiala jail. The case revolves around the procurement of a high-value Bulgari jewelry collection at a significantly reduced price.

The judgment outlined specific penalties: 10 years each under sections 34 and 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, plus an additional seven years each under section 5 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) 1947. Financial penalties totaling Rs16.4 million were also imposed.

The court's decision acknowledged certain mitigating circumstances. According to the judgment: "Taking these factors into account, a lenient approach was adopted in awarding lesser punishment. Additionally, the benefit of Section 382-B of the CrPC has been extended to both convicts."

# # Details of the Allegations

Federal Investigation Agency records indicate the Bulgari jewelry collection, a gift from the Saudi crown prince, carried a valuation exceeding Rs71 million, as verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prosecutors allege the defendants arranged for a private assessment that placed the value at merely Rs5.9 million. The collection consisted of a necklace, bracelet, ring, and earrings. Authorities claim the gift was neither properly deposited in Toshakhana nor accurately appraised.

Private valuator Sohaib Abbasi initially assessed the items, followed by customs personnel. Prosecutors contend that former principal secretary Inam Shah improperly influenced officials to deflate the valuation.

# # Case Timeline

**July 13, 2024:** The National Accountability Bureau detained both accused at Adiala jail, maintaining custody for 37 days during the investigation phase.

**August 20, 2024:** NAB submitted a formal reference to the accountability court.

**September 9, 2024:** Following a Supreme Court ruling on NAB amendments, jurisdiction transferred to the FIA Anti-Corruption Court, which added charges under Section 5 of PCA 1947 and Section 409 of PPC.

**September 16, 2024:** The trial commenced with Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand conducting the initial hearing at Adiala jail.

**October 23-24, 2024:** The Islamabad High Court granted Bushra Bibi bail, leading to her release.

**November 20, 2024:** Khan received bail approval.

**December 12, 2024:** Formal charges were presented against both defendants.

# # Trial Evidence and Legal Teams

Throughout the proceedings, which spanned nearly a year, prosecutors presented testimony from 24 witnesses, with cross-examination completed for 20 key individuals. Significant witnesses included former military secretary Brigadier (retd) Muhammad Ahmad, private valuator Sohaib Abbasi, and Khan's former principal secretary Inamullah.

The FIA prosecution was headed by Federal Prosecutor Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi, supported by Barristers Umair Majeed Malik, Bilal Butt, and Shahvez Gilani. Defense representation included Arshad Tabrez, Qausain Faisal M***i, and Barrister Salman Safdar.

**Democrats release dozens more new images from Epstein estate**

**New photos released ahead of DOJ deadline**

**WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters)** - On Thursday, Congressional Democrats unveiled dozens of additional photographs from the estate of deceased convicted s*x offender Jeffrey Epstein

**Disturbing content in latest batch**

The most recent collection of photographs contains close-up shots of passages from "Lo**ta," a novel depicting a man's fixation on a 12-year-old girl, written in black ink on various parts of a woman's body — including her chest, foot, neck and back; censored identification documents belonging to women from Russia, Morocco, Italy, Czech Republic, South Africa, Ukraine and Lithuania; and a late-night text message exchange discussing sending girls to someone referred to as "j" for $1,000 per person.

**Prominent figures pictured in photos**

The 68 photographs are part of approximately 95,000 that Epstein's estate provided to the House Oversight Committee. The previous week, oversight Democrats made public 19 photographs, some showing now-President Donald Trump, who characterized the images as "no big deal." The newest batch also includes pictures of billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, academic and political commentator Noam Chomsky, and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon.

**Committee promises more transparency**

Committee Democrats stated the photographs unveiled Thursday "were selected to provide the public with transparency into a representative sample of the photos" and "to provide insights into Epstein's network and his extremely disturbing activities."

Democrats indicated they possess thousands of additional images, "both graphic and mundane," which remain under review.

"Oversight Democrats will continue to release photographs and documents from the Epstein estate to provide transparency for the American people," said California Representative Robert Garcia, top Democrat on the Oversight Committee. "As we approach the deadline for the Epstein Files Transparency Act, these new images raise more questions about what exactly the Department of Justice has in its possession. We must end this White House cover-up, and the DOJ must release the Epstein files now."

**White House responds**

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the latest release changes nothing.

"President Trump has been consistently calling for transparency related to the Epstein files and his administration has delivered," she said in a statement.

TikTok Deal Secures Its Future for U.S. Users

TikTok’s Chinese parent company, **ByteDance**, has finalized binding agreements with U.S. and international investors to continue operating its business in America, the company’s CEO, **Shou Zi Chew**, informed employees on Thursday.

Under the agreement, **half of the new joint venture** will be owned by a group of investors, including **Oracle**, **Silver Lake**, and the Emirati investment firm **MGX**, according to Chew’s memo.

The deal, which is scheduled to close on **22 January**, resolves years of efforts by Washington to force ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations due to national security concerns.

---

# # # Ownership Structure and Investor Details

ByteDance will retain **19.9%** of the U.S. business, while Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX will each hold **15%**. The remaining **30.1%** will be controlled by affiliates of existing ByteDance investors.

The **White House** confirmed that Oracle, co-founded by Trump supporter **Larry Ellison**, will license TikTok’s recommendation algorithm as part of the deal.

---

# # # Context and Historical Background

The agreement aligns with a **September deal**, when former President Donald Trump delayed enforcement of a law that would have banned TikTok unless it was sold.

In April 2024, during President Joe Biden’s administration, Congress passed legislation requiring TikTok’s sale over security concerns, with the law initially set to take effect on **20 January 2025**. The deadline was delayed several times while negotiations continued between the U.S. and China.

Trump stated in September that he had spoken with China’s President **Xi Jinping**, who approved the deal. However, the platform’s status remained uncertain following their October face-to-face meeting, amid ongoing trade and diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

---

# # # Impact on U.S. Users

TikTok stated in its memo that the deal will allow **over 170 million Americans** to continue using the platform as part of a “vital global community.”

**Alvin Graylin**, a lecturer at MIT, noted, *“TikTok has become a bargaining chip in the wider US-China relationship. With recent softening tensions, Beijing's sign off on the structure and algorithm licensing now looks less like capitulation and more like calibrated de-escalation, letting both capitals claim a win at home.”*

---

# # # Concerns and Criticisms

Senator **Ron Wyden** of Oregon criticized the agreement, saying it does not “do a thing to protect the privacy of American users.” The deal requires TikTok’s recommendation algorithm to be retrained on U.S. user data to prevent external manipulation. Wyden added, *“It's unclear that it will even put TikTok's algorithm in safer hands.”*

---

# # # Reactions from Users and Businesses

Some TikTok users remain cautious about the change in ownership. **Tiffany Cianci**, a small business owner with over **300,000 followers**, expressed hope that the platform would continue to support entrepreneurs: *“I hope small business owners are protected. I reserve judgement on whether or not we have saved the app for those small business.”*

TikTok reports that over **seven million small businesses** in the U.S. use the platform to market their products and services. Cianci said she chose TikTok for promotion because it offers better profit-sharing terms than competitors such as Meta and has actively participated in protests to save the platform.

Below is a summary of the key developments:

---

# # What Sparked the Unrest

Protests intensified late Thursday night after confirmation of Hadi’s death. He was among the leading figures of the 2024 youth-led movement that contributed to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Demonstrations that had been ongoing escalated sharply and have continued into Friday.

# # Arrival of Hadi’s Body

Hadi’s body is expected to arrive in **Dhaka from Singapore at 18:00 local time (12:00 GMT)**. It will be taken to **Dhaka University’s central mosque**, where large crowds of supporters are expected to gather.

---

# # Election Timing Raises Concerns

The shooting occurred just **one day after authorities announced February as the date for Bangladesh’s first national election since Hasina’s removal**. Hadi was expected to contest the polls, intensifying suspicions of political motives behind the attack.

Caretaker government chief Muhammad Yunus has previously described the shooting as an attempt to **"derail the election"**.

---

# # Attacks on Media Outlets

Two leading newspapers, **The Daily Star** and **Prothom Alo**, have suspended operations for the day after their offices were vandalised by protesters overnight.

The attacks on the publications are **“unprecedented and shocking,”** writes Global Affairs correspondent **Anbarasan Ethirajan**.

# # Political Reactions and National Mourning

Condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum, with political parties urging authorities to identify and punish those responsible.

Authorities have announced that **Bangladesh will observe a day of national mourning on Saturday**.

---

# # Appeal for Calm

Muhammad Yunus has urged patience among mourners and called on the public **not to do anything rash**, as tensions remain high in the capital.

**US suspends green card lottery program following Brown University shooting**

**Trump halts diversity visa scheme**

President Donald Trump has halted the United States green card lottery program after a mass shooting at Brown University last week that claimed two lives.

The attacker, a 48-year-old Portuguese national Claudio Neves Valente who was discovered dead on Thursday, had entered the United States through the diversity lottery immigrant visa program (DV1) in 2017 and received a green card.

**Homeland Security pauses visa program**

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced she has temporarily stopped the visa program following Trump's instructions to "ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous programme".

American authorities believe Neves Valente also murdered Portuguese Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno Loureiro earlier this week.

The diversity visa program allocates up to 50,000 visas annually through a random selection system among applicants from nations with minimal immigration rates to the United States.

**Previous attempt to end program**

In a social media statement, Noem noted that Trump had previously attempted to terminate the program in 2017 following a truck-ramming incident in New York City that killed eight individuals.

According to Noem, Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbekistan citizen and Islamic State sympathizer currently serving multiple life sentences for that attack, had also entered America through the DV1 program.

**Suspect found dead after manhunt**

Her statement came shortly after Neves Valente was discovered deceased in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, from what authorities suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot injury.

Investigators said video footage and information from community members directed them to a vehicle rental location where they identified the suspect's identity and connected him to their person of interest, concluding a six-day multi-state search operation.

He was located with a bag and two weapons. Items found in a nearby vehicle were connected to the Brown University shooting scene in Providence, according to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

**Suspect's connection to Brown University**

Brown University President Christina Paxson revealed that Neves Valente was registered at the prestigious Ivy League institution from autumn 2000 through the following spring semester, pursuing a PhD in physics.

She stated he had "no current active affiliation" to Brown.

**Link to MIT professor's murder**

Officials believe Neves Valente fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, 47, on Monday at his residence in Brookline, located approximately 50 miles (80km) from Providence.

Both individuals had attended the same Portuguese university during the late 1990s, according to police.

Authorities connected the two cases after identifying the suspect's vehicle through security camera recordings and a witness statement at Brown University.

The identical vehicle was seen near the location of the professor's murder, which occurred just two days afterward.

Law enforcement has not disclosed any suspected motive behind either attack.

**Two students killed in campus shooting**

Two students lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries when a shooter entered Brown University's engineering facility on December 13 and began firing during final examinations.

The victims have been named as Ella Cook, 19, a second-year student from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, an Uzbek-American who had recently begun his studies at the university.
