Blue mosque Istanbul
The mosque's official name is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), named after Sultan Ahmed I, who commissioned its construction.
It earned the popular nickname "Blue Mosque" because of its stunning interior decoration:
* Blue Tiles: The inside is adorned with more than 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles from Iznik, which feature intricate floral and geometric patterns, predominantly in blue, green, and turquoise hues.
* Blue Paint: The upper levels of the interior are also painted blue to complement the tiles.
* Light Effect: Natural light filters through its numerous stained-glass windows, enhancing the blue tones and creating a mesmerizing, bluish glow throughout the interior.
So, while the outside is a classic display of Ottoman architecture with cascading domes and minarets, the popular name comes directly from the beautiful, blue-dominant design you see when you step inside.
