Pakistan is looking beyond traditional literacy to unlock the potential of its massive youth population.
Minister for Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training Pakistan Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has called for coordinated efforts in formal, non-formal and technical education to transform 150 million young Pakistanis into a skilled national asset capable of meeting domestic and global workforce demands.
Speaking at an International Literacy Day 2026 event at Allama Iqbal Open University, the minister proposed innovative learning solutions, including using the countryโ€™s extensive network of mosques as short-duration learning centres for underserved communities.
The government is also emphasizing non-formal education, skills development and Recognition of Prior Learning to reconnect out-of-school children and adults with education and livelihood opportunities.
With millions of young people entering the workforce, Pakistanโ€™s biggest challenge could also become its biggest opportunity: turning its youth population into a skilled workforce for the future.

The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) has directed medical and dental colleges across Pakistan to stop admitting Afghan nationals during the current academic session.
The council has also instructed institutions to facilitate the return of Afghan students already enrolled in medical and dental programmes, including completing administrative formalities and issuing required NOCs.
The directive, issued on September 1 and reiterating instructions first communicated on July 31, also prohibits new admissions, placements, transfers, migrations and other forms of facilitation for Afghan nationals until further orders.
The decision comes amid Pakistanโ€™s intensified repatriation drive and worsening relations between Islamabad and Kabul.
What impact could this decision have on Afghan students pursuing medical education in Pakistan?

Dreaming of a STEM degree in the United States but worried about the cost?
The SMART Scholarship 2027 offers an exceptional opportunity for eligible students pursuing approved science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields at U.S. institutions.
The U.S. Department of Defense-funded program can provide full tuition support, annual stipends, book and health allowances, summer internships and professional mentoring.
But there is an important difference: SMART is a scholarship-for-service program. After completing their funded education, scholars commit to civilian employment with the U.S. Department of Defense.
Eligible fields include computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, data science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biomedical engineering and several other STEM disciplines.
Current program information lists stipends of approximately $30,000 to $46,000 annually depending on degree level, although students should verify the official figures for the 2027 cycle.
If you are a strong STEM student looking for financial support plus a structured career pathway, SMART Scholarship 2027 deserves your attention.

More than 50 faculty members from UoE campuses across seven cities of Punjab are participating in the programme, which runs from September 4 to 6, 2026.
Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Aqif Anwar Chaudhry and organized by the Center for Lifelong Learning and Leadership (CL3), the initiative aims to move beyond accreditation compliance and make quality improvement part of everyday teaching and learning.
The programme focuses on learning outcomes, assessment alignment, evidence of student learning, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and NCEAC accreditation requirements.
The message from UoE is clear: accreditation should not simply be about preparing documents. It should be an opportunity to improve teaching, strengthen academic programmes and deliver better learning outcomes for students.
