“I am a hijabi and I am a photographer. I am also a doctor but hijaab didn’t affect my job in a hospital. But it did as a photographer. I was not forced into it, I started wearing hijaab regularly 4 years ago because my friends did and I just wanted to be like them. You know how friends follow each other, just like that, but I fell in love with it. I felt relief to have my head covered. The stereotype in Pakistan that girls who pursue art and photography are considered liberal and thought to be dressed in a certain way affected me in the start but not much later on. Because no matter which society you live in, people judge. It’s best to be and stay who are and be proud of what you do and how you do it! Don’t let the society change, let your goals define who you will be.” Photographer Smaha Jahangir () on the occasion of today on 1 February 2019.
