Nvidia experienced a historic $600 billion market cap drop on Monday, the largest single-day loss in U.S. history. Its stock fell 17% to $118.58, fueled by concerns over increased competition from China’s DeepSeek AI.

DeepSeek’s low-cost, open-source AI model, developed using Nvidia’s H800 chips, has raised fears of declining GPU demand. However, analysts argued that advancements in AI would drive higher demand for computing power.

Despite Nvidia’s impressive 171% growth in 2024, market uncertainty led to sell-offs across the tech sector, impacting companies like Broadcom (-17%), Oracle (-14%), and data center firms such as Dell. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s net worth also dropped by $21 billion.

DeepSeek’s app has become the most downloaded in the U.S., surpassing ChatGPT and highlighting China’s growing influence in AI. As competition intensifies, the U.S. must remain proactive to uphold its leadership in AI.
