Pakistan’s auto industry is criticised for its backwardness compared to the rest of the world. There are examples of cars such as the 800cc Mehran, which was abandoned decades back by the rest of the world, and was only recently given up in Pakistan.

Chaudhry added that industry must give up the idea of improving and developing with the government’s help alone. “The government’s job is not to do business. It can only facilitate the private sector,” he said.

He further said that Pakistan must make lithium batteries, which are used in making electric vehicles.

“Pakistan can make JF-Thunder (fighter aircraft) and Al-Khalid (battle tanks) but we don’t make cars and we can’t make mobile phones and TVs,” he said, bashing the country’s industry.

The city's rank has improved to 94 on the International Crime Index, claimed Sindh IGP in a notification issued on Friday.

Karachi had been ranked 6th among 374 cities of the world in 2014, rising to 71 in 2018 and at the end of 2019. It further improved to 88 in January, 2020, and is now 94 on the index as of the start of January 2021. This change has been accredited to better policing and anti-crime efforts, with a spokesperson for the Sindh police stating on behalf of the police chief that the peace and security situation in Sindh, and especially in Karachi, had improved while different crimes have significantly decreased.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Friday informed the London High Court that it has paid around $7 million to Peregrine Aviation Charlie Ltd in the case pertaining to two jets leased to it by the Dublin-based AerCap.

The development came after the Malaysian authorities seized a PIA Boeing-777 at the Kuala Lumpur airport last Friday, on the orders of a local Malaysian court, over the non-payment of aircraft lease dues owed to the Dublin-based AerCap.

Lawyers for both the PIA and the airliner sought an adjournment as they hoped that the full amount would be paid through an agreement without the court issuing an order against PIA.

Appearing online, the airline’s lawyer Erin Hitchens requested the judge to adjourn the hearing as the parties settle issues of the lease, rent, interest, lease, and the allocation of payment.

The Dublin-based AerCap's lawyer told the court: “The claimant’s position is that the sums were paid today by the defendant (PIA).”

The court was told that PIA didn’t make payments since it asked for the amendment of its claim in July and that it owed $580,000 per month to the airliner, but it didn’t pay and litigation was initiated.

The leasing company had filed a case against PIA in London High Court in October 2020 over its failure to pay the leasing fee — worth about $14 million — which had been pending for six months.

In return, PIA had maintained that since the COVID-19 pandemic had seriously affected the aviation industry, there should be a reduction in the overhead charges.

Meanwhile, the leasing company kept an eye on the activities of PIA, and as soon as it received the information of flight 895's scheduled landing in Malaysia, it appealed to a local court to seize the aircraft as per the international civil aviation leasing laws, sources added.

The Boeing 777 aircraft was seized after London High Court issued the order, an airline spokesman had said

After what seems to have been a celebratory gathering, Afridi took to Twitter to announce that MG had sold 1000 units of the HS in Islamabad.

Ever since its arrival in Pakistan, Morris Garages (MG) seems to have taken the SUV market by storm. Javed Afridi had claimed a few months ago that MG had received 10,000 bookings for the HS SUV but many experts had refuted him, citing various reasons pertaining to the demand and supply dynamics of the auto industry.

MG Motors has acquired Greenfield Status under Automotive Development Policy 2016-20. As per the ADP, every car manufacturing company gets tax relaxations for importing only 100 units of a single variant of its models. By tax relaxations, they mean a 50% concession in Customs Duty. If the company imports even one more unit than the limit of 100, it will have to pay 100% Customs Duty.
