I became part of the archaeology department Punjab University in 2023. Prior to this, I was independently producing documentary material on the heritage of Lahore, aimed at increasing public awareness and historical understanding. After joining the department, I received consistent guidance and encouragement from both the department and its Chairman, Dr. Muhammad Hameed. Acknowledging my academic interest and professional capability, they offered full support and enabled me to document heritage sites not only in Lahore but also in various regions across the country.
As a result of this work, the documented sites reached millions, of people nationwide. This exposure brought long neglected sites into public attention and later led to proper conservation and restoration efforts. These outcomes demonstrate the department’s practical commitment to heritage protection and public engagement.
During Dr. Muhammad Hameed’s leadership, the department has progressed significantly. Clear improvements have been made in overall departmental growth as well as in faculty development. New academic programs have been introduced to align with current academic and professional requirements. The department has also established Memoranda of Understanding with national and international institutions, encouraging collaboration, research, and academic exchange.
Alongside this, multiple academic and research projects have been undertaken. The department regularly hosts seminars, lectures, and guest sessions that strengthen the academic environment and provide students with practical insights. These initiatives have supported students in securing employment in heritage, research, tourism, and related fields, while also enhancing the department’s reputation and presenting a positive image at national and international levels.
Concerning internal departmental issues, it is regrettable that a small number of students have developed personal differences with the Chairman and have repeatedly spread propaganda against Dr. Muhammad Hameed through unsupported allegations. These claims are based on hearsay and lack credible evidence. Similar instances of propaganda have occurred two or three times during my period of study, all of which I personally observed.
Any individual visiting the department can see the extensive collection of artifacts gathered through academic tours and archaeological excavations. These materials are properly preserved. Due to the size of this collection, the department currently faces space limitations. For this reason, Dr. Muhammad Hameed is actively working toward expanding the department to ensure that these artifacts are appropriately stored, displayed, and studied in line with their historical importance.
