LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday oversaw the trial run of Pakistan’s first urban electric train — the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) — from Ali Town to Muslim Town in Lahore.

The CM inspected onboard facilities and monitored the train’s performance in regular city traffic, accompanied by Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, who briefed her on technical aspects of the Norinco International-manufactured train.

The fully electric train consists of three air-conditioned coaches with a capacity of 320 passengers and can travel up to 40 km on a single charge. A fourth coach may be added later.

Already operational in China, Turkey, and the UAE, the system is being introduced in Pakistan to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Maryam Nawaz hailed the project as a symbol of progress, adding that similar initiatives are planned for Gujranwala and Faisalabad.

She also announced the launch of 1,100 electric buses across Punjab, with fares starting at Rs20 to promote affordable, eco-friendly public transport.

Breaking news KARACHI: Massive Blaze Erupts at Landhi Export Processing Zone Factory, Injures Seven and Sparks Explosion Fears

A devastating third-degree fire broke out Thursday at a factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone, prompting a large-scale emergency response, according to ARY News.

Fire officials confirmed that at least 16 fire tenders and two water bowsers have been deployed in an ongoing effort to douse the flames. The fire, which originated in one industrial unit, quickly spread to several adjacent factories—raising alarms due to the presence of gas cylinder storage in one of the neighboring facilities, which poses a serious risk of explosions.

So far, seven injured workers have been rescued from the affected factory. Parts of the five-storey building’s roof have collapsed due to intense heat, making rescue efforts even more challenging.

Emergency teams have urgently called for additional water supplies as the fire remains uncontrolled despite hours of firefighting. Authorities have warned of further structural damage and heightened danger if the situation isn’t brought under control soon.

This marks the second major industrial fire in Karachi in recent weeks, intensifying concerns over inadequate fire safety protocols in the city’s key economic and industrial hubs.
