🕊️ Upholding the Pillars of Democracy
"Freedom of the press is the cornerstone of any democratic society," stated Mr. Badar. "Journalists serve as the eyes and ears of the public, holding power to account and ensuring transparency. Without a free press, democracy cannot thrive."
He emphasized that the HRPF remains steadfast in its mission to protect journalists and media workers from threats, harassment, and censorship. "Our organization stands as a bulwark against the erosion of press freedoms, advocating for the rights of those who risk their lives to bring truth to light," he affirmed.
⚖️ Addressing Legislative Challenges
Mr. Badar expressed deep concern over recent legislative developments that pose significant threats to press freedom in Pakistan. He highlighted the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025, which has been criticized for its potential to suppress dissent and control public discourse .
"Laws intended to combat misinformation must not become tools for silencing legitimate journalism," he warned. "The HRPF calls for transparent, inclusive policymaking that safeguards both national security and the fundamental right to free expression."
🛡️ Combating Violence and Impunity
The Chairman drew attention to the alarming increase in violence against journalists, noting that 2024 was one of the deadliest years for media workers in Pakistan, with multiple targeted killings and numerous violations reported .
"The culture of impunity surrounding attacks on journalists must end," Mr. Badar asserted. "Perpetrators must be held accountable, and protective mechanisms must be strengthened to ensure the safety of media professionals."
🤝 A Call to Action
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Badar urged all stakeholders—government bodies, civil society, and international organizations—to collaborate in fostering an environment where press freedom is respected and protected.
On this World Press Freedom Day, let us recommit to the principles of free expression and support those who dedicate their lives to informing the public," he said.
