Heritage by Night Exploring Peshawar After Sunset There’s something special about exploring Peshawar after sunset. The old streets become quieter, the heritage sites light up, and the stories of the city feel even more alive.

We were pleased to organise a customised “Heritage by Night” tour for the members of "IMPETUS", taking them through the historic Walled City of Peshawar.

Our guests visited Peshawar Museum, Gor Khatri and Sethi House, followed by a guided walk through the historic streets, bazaars and markets of the old city.

They especially appreciated the beautiful illumination work carried out by the Directorate of Archaeology & Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in support of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project - KITE The lighting has given these historic places a completely different charm after dark.

It was a wonderful evening of history, stories, culture and conversations and another reminder that Peshawar has so much to offer when you take the time to experience it.

Heritage by Night is an initiative of Tour Da Pekhawar & Directorate Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums, KP

A watercolour of Peshawar city, painted by Charlotte Canning on 1 March 1860.

Peshawar was an important city in British India, situated near the frontier and known for its diverse cultural and historical significance.

This panoramic watercolour, painted from the fort, depicts the walled city of Peshawar with its mosques, minarets, tightly packed houses, and defensive walls. In the distance rise the blue mountains of the frontier; in the foreground, elephants, camels, and figures move along the roads and ramparts, conveying the bustle of daily life.

Lady Charlotte Canning (1817–1861), wife of Charles Canning, the first Viceroy of India, was an accomplished amateur watercolourist and a keen observer of the landscapes and people she encountered. She executed this view during the Cannings’ official tour of the Punjab and North-West Frontier in early 1860. Many of her Indian sketches, including this one, were later published in Sketches from a Howdah: Charlotte, Lady Canning’s Indian Tours, 1858–1861 by F. S. Aijazuddin.

𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐊𝐏 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭: Extremely encouraging news for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s cultural heritage. UNESCO has added four important KP heritage sites to its Tentative List, bringing renewed international attention to the province’s rich and diverse archaeological and architectural heritage.
The four sites are:

• 𝐆𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱, 𝐏𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫
• 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐏𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫
• 𝐁𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱, 𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐩𝐮𝐫/𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐚
• 𝐁𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐫𝐚, 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐭 𝐒𝐰𝐚𝐭

This follows the addition in 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 of the 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐭, 𝐑𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 to the Tentative List.

The recent additions are particularly significant because KP had not seen a site added to UNESCO’s Tentative List for many years. The previous KP entries were the 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐬 at 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐡𝐛𝐚𝐳𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐡𝐢 and 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐫𝐚, and 𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢 𝐃𝐈𝐊 which were added in 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟒.

The 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭 is essentially UNESCO’s inventory of sites that a country considers to have potential for future nomination as World Heritage Sites. It is an important preliminary step in the nomination process and places these sites within the international World Heritage framework. Further documentation, conservation work, management planning and evaluation are required before any site can be formally nominated and considered for World Heritage status.

The 𝐊𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬 is also being considered for the World Heritage List, recognising its millennia of history, ancient routes, archaeological remains and enduring importance as a gateway between civilisations.

There is also reason to acknowledge the role of Dr Abdul Samad, DG of Archaeology and Museums, KP. His steady leadership and persistence in bringing KP’s heritage onto the international radar, despite the many challenges facing the sector are beginning to bear fruit. The addition of the Kalasha Valleys a few months ago, followed now by four more sites, is a significant development and reflects the groundwork that has been pursued by his team over the years.

For a province with such an extraordinary archaeological and cultural landscape, greater international recognition can only be a positive step. The real challenge now is to build on this momentum and ensure that these sites receive the conservation, care and management they deserve.

Three nations, three brothers, one soul. 🇵🇰🤝🇹🇷🤝🇸🇦 Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia stand together in a new chapter of faith, trust, cooperation and mutual support. Different flags, different cultures, yet one shared spirit of brotherhood, peace and unity. May this bond grow stronger and remain a source of strength and friendship for generations to come. ❤️

And from Peshawar, the historic heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, we celebrate this brotherhood with the same spirit that defines our city hospitality, culture, heritage and friendship with the world.
