Class 02: Use of Is, Am, and Are

In the second English as a Second Language (ESL) class, students were introduced to the use of “is,” “am,” and “are” in simple sentences through the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach.

The lesson focused on helping students understand these helping verbs through meaningful communication rather than memorization. Students actively participated in classroom activities and practiced forming sentences using is, am, and are in different real-life situations.

After practicing sentence formation, students applied these words to self-introduction. They learned how “am” is commonly used with “I”, for example:

- I am a student.
- I am from Nara.
- I am happy.
- I am 15 years old.

Students also learned how “is” and “are” are used when talking about other people, objects, and groups:

- He is my friend.
- She is a teacher.
- This is my book.
- We are students.
- They are my classmates.

The self-introduction activity provided students with an opportunity to use the target language naturally and confidently. Through pair work, classroom interaction, and speaking practice, students were encouraged to communicate with their classmates using complete sentences.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the lesson, students were able to:

1. Identify the correct use of is, am, and are.
2. Construct simple sentences using these forms.
3. Use am appropriately in self-introduction.
4. Use is and are when describing people, objects, and groups.
5. Apply the target language in everyday communication.
6. Improve their speaking confidence through meaningful classroom interaction.

Overall, the lesson demonstrated how CLT connects grammar with real-life communication. Instead of learning is, am, and are as isolated grammar rules, students used them as practical language tools for introducing themselves and communicating with others.
