Gilgit-Baltistan has reported its first confirmed case of polio in over seven years. The case has emerged from Tangir Gabbar, where a 2-year-old child has tested positive for the virus. According to health officials, the child had not received a complete polio vaccination course.

This case has sparked concern among public health authorities and residents alike, raising questions about the gaps in routine immunization, outreach in remote areas, and community awareness.

While Gilgit-Baltistan remained polio-free for several years, this incident is a stark reminder that the virus still lingers and can return if vigilance is lost. Health departments are now expected to initiate emergency vaccination campaigns in the area and revisit strategies to ensure no child is missed in future drives.

The weather in Skardu isn’t what it used to be. Once known for its long, icy winters and pleasantly cool summers, the region is now witnessing a noticeable shift in temperature patterns. Winters are getting shorter and less intense, while summers are becoming hotter and more prolonged.

Experts say these are not just seasonal fluctuations but clear signs of climate change. Gilgit-Baltistan is home to the largest number of glaciers outside the polar regions and these glaciers are retreating faster each year. Studies indicate that many of the region’s major glaciers are shrinking, posing a serious risk to future water availability, agriculture, and ecological stability.

Locals have begun noticing the change too. Summer temperatures, which once barely crossed 25°C, now frequently rise above 30°C. Unseasonal rainfall, glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and landslides have become increasingly common, raising alarm across the region.

With schools left without teachers, frustrated parents already troubled by excessive local and calendar-based holidays are now deeply concerned about their children’s academic future.

Parents urge the authorities to resolve the issue immediately to avoid further disruption in education.
