Pakistani health-tech Bioniks has successfully fitted its first prosthetic limb in Gaza for a young girl injured in the ongoing genocidal war. 🇵🇸

The company said the fitting was made possible through its partnership with Mafaz, Bioniks’ official collaborator in Jordan.

The recipient, Sidra, lost her arm during the war and now becomes the first beneficiary of Bioniks’ long-term humanitarian initiative aimed at war victims in Gaza.

A recent study by Poland-based Pakistani Neuroscientist Dr. Ali Jawaid , MD, PhD has revealed the coding and non-coding transcriptomics of TDP-43 depletion/mutation in NSC-34 motoneurons, a commonly employed cellular model of the devastating neurodegenerative disorder ALS. This data description can go a long way in yielding novel mechanistic insight, biomarkers, and potential targets for neurodegenerative disease therapy.

The study got published in Scientific Data, a Nature Portfolio journal with an impressive 5-year impact factor of 8.7. Dr. Ali Jawaid’s postdoc Dr. Ismail Gbadamosi is the first author of the study.

Dr. Ali Jawaid is an alumnus of and is currently the head of at the PORT Polish Center for Technology Development, Wroclaw, Poland. He is also a scholar of FENS-Kavli Network of Excellence, a network of 30 leading Neuroscientists in Europe.

Islamabad Institute of Technology’s Team GeoGemma has won the prestigious 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 - 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲. The final round was held at Google Manila, Philippines! 🌍

Out of over 750 teams from 12 countries, they rose to the top 10 finalists and later won the competition.

The project, GeoGemma, is led by Ahmed Iqbal, Campus Lead of Google Developer Groups IST, alongside team members Hanzila Bin Younas, Khalil Ur Rehman and Abdullah Asif, from IST’s Department of Computer Science and Department of Space Science.

Their innovative work fuses Generative AI with planetary-scale satellite imagery, showcasing how tech and space science can solve real-world challenges.

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan is reportedly expanding its order of JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, a joint production between Pakistan and China.

✈️ Initially, Azerbaijan secured a deal for 16 of these advanced multirole aircraft, but unconfirmed sources now indicate the order may increase to 40 units, adding 24 more jets to the original agreement.

📅 The initial agreement for 16 JF-17 Thunder Block III jets ($1.6 billion) was formalized in February 2024, with Azerbaijan confirming its integration into its air force by October of that year.

⚠️ Note that official confirmation from Baku for the additional purchase remains pending.

🔬 The Ministry of National Health Services has launched a strategic roadmap to collaborate with China’s leading genomics research institution, BGI Group, aiming to bolster Pakistan’s national capacity in genetic research. This initiative seeks to advance genetic testing, rare disease research, and diagnostic technologies in the country.

🇵🇰 To determine Pakistan’s technical and strategic priorities in genetic health, the NIH will form a team of experts tasked with drafting recommendations on effectively utilizing BGI’s expertise to meet national goals.

👨‍⚕️ A Pakistani delegation is also scheduled to visit BGI’s facilities in China to study their advanced research on thalassemia, reproductive health, cancer, and rare diseases.

👁️ Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its public health journey by being officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem. This recognition marks a major victory against a disease that once posed a serious threat to vision health across the country.

🇵🇰 The honorary certificate was presented to Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal during the 78th World Health Assembly held in Geneva. The WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, personally awarded the certificate, applauding Pakistan’s dedicated efforts in eradicating this infectious eye disease.
