Medical Research Journal

Medical Research Journal Medical Research Journal is a scientific journal which publishes high quality original and review articles covering a broad spectrum of medical topics.

Medical Research Journal a is the official journal of Collegium Medicum, Nicolaus Copernicus University with international peer-review. The journal is published in English four times per year. The journal welcomes contributions of original communications, experimental and theoretical, that advance medical and biomedical science. A manuscript within the scope of the journal should cover the field o

f general medicine, pharmaceutical research, immunology, hematology and hemostasis, molecular diagnostics, toxicology, endocrinology, oncology, nursing, clinical biochemistry, analytical techniques and evidence-based laboratory medicine. The majority of the published contents includes original papers covering a broad spectrum of medical topics and review papers submitted largely upon the journal editors’ request by authors considered experts in a certain medical or biomedical domain.

Very late stent thrombosis has been increasingly described in the drug eluting stent era. A 56-year-old male presented with anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction, he received a bare-metal stent in the left anterior descending artery in 2010. We obtained an optical coherence tomography scan, showing ruptured neoatherosclerotic plaque with thrombus.

T and B lymphocytes play crucial roles in adaptive immunity. These cells are negatively affected in multiple disorders, including chronic kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to compare T and B lymphocyte ratios between patients with chronic kidney disease and healthy controls.
This study suggests that patients with advanced chronic kidney disease have lower rates of lymphocytes that healthy controls. This fact may at least partially explain impaired immunity in this setting. However, our findings require confirmation and detailed investigation of underlying mechanisms in further studies.

Medical care providers are responsible for adequate preparation of patients for discharge from the hospital. The purpose of this study was to validate a new self-reported questionnaire assessing the readiness of patients for hospital discharge.
The validation procedure revealed that RHD MIS is a reliable and homogeneous tool to measure the readiness of patients for hospital discharge. The set of items divided into three subscales allows subjective and objective evaluation of the patient’s knowledge and expectations. Further investigation is needed to assess the potential impact of RHD MIS scoring on long-term outcome.

The localisation of head and neck carcinomas influences the functions of speech, breathing, and swallowing, which, in turn, directly affect the patient’s quality of life. The poor prognosis associated with tumours of this type indicates that aggressive combined therapy protocols, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, should be implemented. Such treatments commonly cause acute toxicity and short- and long-term swallowing complications. Therefore, even though they can contribute significantly to survivorship, these treatments reduce the quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of applied combined oncological treatments on the occurrence of dysphagia in patients with head and neck cancer and on their quality of life.

This study was conducted on a population of patients with in ammatory bowel disease (IBD) and was based on an assessment of the prevalence and severity of depression and anxiety symptoms in various clinical aspects. The psychological features of IBD patients are very important in the perception of symptoms, but crucial as triggers of IBD or as a releasing factor for IBD symptoms recurrence.
The analyses did not reveal significant differences in the severity and prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in subgroups with IBD. The expansion of relevant symptoms of anxiety and depression in this population was greater than in the general population. In addition, there was a significant correlation between parameters of HADS and clinical factors.

The aim of this mini-review is to demonstrate the phenomenon called metabolic chiral inversion of 2-aryl- propionic acid derivatives (profens) and to indicate pharmacotherapeutic and toxicological consequences of profens administration in racemic form.

According to a definition, stroke is: “a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden appearance of focal or global dysfunctions of the brain, which, if it do not lead to earlier death, persist longer than 24 hours and do not have a cause other than vascular”. By 2015, the goal of the rehabilitation set by the Helsingborg Declaration 2006, was that more than 70% of survivors are independent in their activities of daily living by three months after the onset of stroke.
In Poland, according to data from 2008, only 19% of branches provided a comprehensive post-stroke rehabilitation, which secured 38,5% of the needs in this field.

Data relating to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and risk of fractures are limited, and the effect of TSH within the normal range on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone remodelling is controversial. We aimed to evaluate whether variations across TSH concentration within the normal range are associated with bone metabolism expressed by bone remodeling markers in euthyroid postmenopausal women with osteoporotic fractures.

The objective of the research was to study the knowledge about ischaemic heart disease and learning preferences of hospitalised patients as a result of myocardial infarction.
Educational brochures are the preferred source of knowledge about ischaemic heart disease for patients hospitalised as a result of myocardial infarction. The knowledge of ischaemic heart disease possessed by patients with myocardial infarction is inadequate and there is no clear connection with patients’ preferences regarding the choice of educational methods.

The aim of this study is to verify whether the use of MTH after resuscitation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients with STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI), affects the anti-platelet effect of ticagrelor. Moreover, we attempt to elucidate the mechanisms of impaired effect of ticagrelor in MTH patients based on pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic measurements.

Myocardial infarction is known to account for left ventricular remodelling and mitral annular distortion. The aim of the study was to assess and compare morphometric changes of mitral annulus in patients presenting with acute anterior or inferior myocardial infarction. It was therefore decided to: assessment of anteroposterior and septolateral annular dimensions of mitral annulus in patients with acute myocardial infarction; assessment of mitral annular area and annular contraction in patients with acute myocardial infarction; evaluation of parameters reflecting mitral apparatus (chordal length, chordal papillary muscle distance, etc.); and comparison of mitral annular geometry between patients with anterior and inferior myocardial infarction.

This study was undertaken in order to evaluate the impact of the choice of the right or left radial approach on 12-month clinical outcomes in patients undergoing the trans-radial intervention. Trans-radial intervention has several advantages such as reduction of bleeding risk, improvement of patients’ convenience, and immediate ambulation as compared with the trans-femoral intervention. In the trans-radial intervention, there are some anatomical and technical differences between right and left radial approach.
