Free European Media Free European Media and European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) in cooperation with Council of Euro

We need a game changer, and as mechanisms to make a difference, the project consists of four elements, where the focal point will be a conference on the topic of Free Media in Europe. It will be prepared by a debate-book and followed-up as it should not be just another conference. We must create a scene, where we succeed in reaching out to the citizens and creating a dialogue much needed. Well in

advance of the conference, the partners shall provide background documentation containing:

• An analysis on how media are affected in targeted areas in Europe (incl. outcome of the EU “Media Pluralism Monitor” and results of the CoE study on self-censorship).

• The media situation in countries where democracy is in decline or threatened (i.e. outcome of the CoE Platform for the protection of journalism and the safety of journalists).

• Results of the follow-up of the report on press freedom and media pluralism carried out by the so-called High-Level Group delivered to the EU Commission.

• A debate book containing concrete conflicts between media and politics from various countries in Europe. Journalists from the selected countries should be authors of the chapters.

The European Parliament protects journalists 📰📺

From the Media Freedom Act, that protects media independence and pluralism to the Anti-SLAPP directive, which protects journalists against lawsuits aimed at silencing them, MEPs have approved several laws over the years to safeguard EU journalists.

But the work does not stop here. Today, on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, shares this important message:

"No journalist should be killed for defending democracy.
Journalists must be free to provide information - free from harassment, vilification or threats. We must and we can protect them better."

During the last 15 years, 44 journalists reporting about biodiversity and climate change have been murdered, and more than 750 violent attacks against them have been reported. 85 % of the perpetrators of the murders have never been brought to justice. Those scaring figures were mentioned again and again at the UNESCO World Press Freedom Day conference just held in Santiago, Chile from the 2nd to the 4th of May, where I together with our great UNESCO Danmark colleagues Mads Randbøll Wolff Malene Nielsen Mansour and Marie Louise Krabbe had the chance to address both challenges and to go into solution mode.

It is even more alarming as we don’t have sufficient focus on scientists risking their life and as well artists who can tell the truth in an emotional way to the people that journalists and scientists cannot. Being in Latin America several participants addressed the severe situation, that mining industry, forest destroy and the drug cause is among one of the most damaging issues to our climate and biodiversity.

We need data, figures and focus to be able to act and protect those who are in the frontline fighting for biodiversity and the climate, fundamental for the humanity. Thus, the conference in Santiago had the theme journalists in face of biodiversity. – This is also an important result of the Danish delegation to UNESCO in Paris closely supported by the Danish UNESCO national commission, namely the work on Critical Voices supported by the Nordic Cultural Fund and expanded to a second level, Critical Roles, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

This work was feeding into several side-events and of course in particular at the leading side-event on this matter initiated by Denmark combining the Danish engagement in the Man & the Biosphere-porogramme and the UN Plan of Action for the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. Furthermore, artists are onboard as they are able in an emotional way to tell the stories that neither scientists, nor journalists normally can do. Joint training, joint grassroot projects within IPDC and empowering our forces to influence authorities to support and protect, those are among the ideas that we have to deal with now. - Photo: LMK, UNESCO
