Today we reaffirm that impunity for crimes against journalists strikes at the very foundations of the rule of law and human rights.
This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution A/RES/68/163) to commemorate the tragic killing of two French journalists in Mali and to call on all States to guarantee the safety, freedom and accountability of the press.

Facts:
According to UNESCO, the global impunity rate for journalist killings remains at around 85%, meaning that the vast majority of such crimes never lead to convictions. This alarming figure reflects not only the fragility of justice systems but also the enduring threats faced by those who serve truth and transparency.

CSNN Stance

We urge authorities and prosecutors to conduct effective, transparent and impartial investigations into all crimes against journalists and to ensure that progress is publicly disclosed.

We call for the full implementation of European and international frameworks that strengthen media freedom, independence and newsroom protection, including legal mechanisms safeguarding reporters in high-risk environments.

We encourage newsrooms to reinforce safety protocols — physical, digital and legal — and to systematically document all forms of harassment, threats or violence in order to combat the culture of impunity.

Journalism is not a crime.
A society where journalists can work without fear is a society where truth can prevail, democracy can function, and citizens can trust the information they receive.

Welcome to James Marlin — Journalist & Contributor (USA)

The Civil Society News Network (CSNN) is proud to welcome Mr James Marlin, a journalist, investigator and public speaker based in New York City, as a new contributor in our international editorial team.

From the quiet town of Portland, Tennessee, to the dynamic heart of New York media and civic dialogue, James has never stopped telling stories that matter. His professional journey combines investigative insight with the power of constructive journalism — always seeking solutions, not divisions.

As a public speaker, he champions collaboration over confrontation, advocating for dialogue between opposing sides of today’s most urgent societal issues. His message is simple yet powerful: meet with curiosity, act with purpose.

James also brings a deeply personal perspective, shaped by nearly 20 years of overcoming addiction — a journey that fuels his resilience, authenticity, and voice for social transformation. His work as Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine, combined with his completion of a journalism programme aligned with NYU and Rolling Stone, reflects both credibility and dedication to continuous growth.

At CSNN, James will focus on socially relevant stories that blend personal narrative, investigative rigour, and civic relevance. We are honoured to have his voice and experience as part of our platform — and we look forward to seeing his contributions spark meaningful engagement.

Welcome aboard, James. We are proud to stand with you. 🌍✍️

At a time of escalating conflicts and declining multilateral trust, AfP’s statement is a direct appeal to governments and institutions to stop sidelining half of humanity in peacebuilding and security efforts. The organisation urges global actors to move beyond symbolic commitments and invest in the structural inclusion of women in diplomatic, defence, and humanitarian decision-making.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda remains one of the most critical frameworks for lasting peace — yet it continues to be underfunded, politically weakened, and institutionally neglected. Twenty-five years after its adoption, the urgency to act has never been greater.

Saturday is the first-ever International Day of the Deep Seabed.

This vast part of the ocean floor beyond national borders —known as 'the Area'— covers over half the global ocean and holds rich mineral resources, which could play a key role in humanity's progress.

The International Day is an important moment to recognize and celebrate that the deep seabed belongs to all humankind —and must be protected.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the landmark United Nations Security Council Resolution, the foundation of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda, AfP urges the international community and U.S. Government to increase investment in and strengthen commitment to WPS.

Civil Society News Network draws global attention to the erosion of democratic standards in Tanzania. Despite censorship, intimidation, and institutional dominance, civil society remains the last stronghold of truth and accountability.

When democracy is reduced to procedure, it is the courage of citizens that keeps its spirit alive.
At CSNN, we stand with those who speak — even when the world chooses silence.

Join us on Wednesday, November 5th at 12pm ET, for the virtual launch of the Institute for Economics and Peace’s Ecological Threat Report (ETR) 2025.

The ETR is a comprehensive, data-driven global assessment of ecological risks that covers 3,125 sub-national areas in 172 countries and territories, representing more than 99 percent of the world's population. It measures four interlocking threats: water risk, food insecurity, the impact of natural events, and demographic pressure. The 2025 ETR is the first edition of the report to include time series data. Covering changes between 2019 and 2024, it gives a view into the year-on-year volatility of ecological threats, many of which stand to be further impacted by Climate Change. After an overview of the report’s findings, experts will provide insights into global trends on water conflict and how the international community can support water cooperation for sustainable peace.

At the Civil Society News Network (CSNN), we believe that behind every powerful story stands not only a journalist — but also a visionary who gives each message a voice, a form, and a purpose.

Today, we take pride in recognising Mr. Waqas Ayub Mughal, our Lead Visual Communicator, who has been with CSNN since its very beginning. His exceptional creativity, professionalism, and sense of social responsibility continue to shape the visual identity of our global network.

Through his design work — from compelling graphics to digital storytelling — Mr. Mughal brings clarity, impact, and emotion to the issues that matter most: equality, civic dialogue, human rights, and justice. His dedication reflects the true spirit of CSNN: building bridges across cultures and nations in the name of a more informed, fair, and connected civil society.

We extend our deepest appreciation for his continuous contribution, vision, and loyalty to the mission of CSNN.

A new editorial analysis by Civil Society News Network examines the recent US airstrike in Yemen, which Amnesty International says should be investigated as a possible war crime.
The strike, carried out on a Houthi-run detention facility and killing more than 60 African migrants, raises urgent questions about accountability, the protection of civilians, and the limits of military power.

In a world where conflicts increasingly blur the line between combatants and civilians, civil society must insist on transparency, responsibility, and justice.
True peace begins with accountability — not silence.
