**Qingdao Grand Prix 2026. Shido for pulling the sleeves?**

I remember this being mentioned during one of the IJF World Refereeing Seminars a while ago, but I don't recall it ever becoming part of the official refereeing rules.

For anyone wondering, don't worry. The shido was cancelled. There is no such rule.

30 seconds remained in the contest when one athlete scored Yuko, but the referee immediately called Sore-made, ending the match.

Yes, it was a mistake.

However, according to the rules, if the contest is stopped while a throwing action has already begun, the referee team may, by a majority of all three referees, still award the appropriate score. That is exactly what happened here.

Why did the referee stop the contest?

Most likely, he believed the match was in Golden Score, where the first score ends the contest immediately.

So, how can you tell whether you're in regular time or Golden Score when you're standing in the middle?

• Green clock = Regular time. A score does not automatically end the contest.
• Yellow clock = Golden Score. The first score ends the contest immediately.
• Red clock = The time is stopped.

According to Article 17 (Osaekomi-waza), it is never allowed to control an opponent in ne-waza using only the legs around the neck without trapping at least one arm inside.

If a competitor wraps only the head or neck with the legs, without controlling an arm, the referee must call Mate and award a Shido.

Even current Olympic champion Yeldos Smetov experienced this in his very first competition after olimpic.

Watch the video carefully and you will see referee gesture for that.

Ushiro-ude-garami under discussion again.

After the hansoku-make given to Zelym Kotsoiev at the European Championships in Georgia,
and the hansoku-make for Artur Sansyzbekov in Kazakhstan, now it is Grzegorz Teresiński in China.

So what is the issue with this technique?

The key problem is the direction of the arm control.

You cannot drive the arm upward along the opponent’s back, because this creates excessive pressure on the shoulder joint and turns into an illegal shoulder lock.

Instead, the arm should be guided away from the back. This creates pressure primarily on the elbow joint, which is allowed in judo.

This distinction may look subtle in real time, but it makes a huge difference in terms of legality and athlete safety.

A good example of correct ex*****on is Raz Hershko in Austria.

Ushiro-ude-garami remains an effective technique, but proper control and direction are crucial.

Shime-waza reminder.

If an athlete loses consciousness, even for a second, ippon must be awarded.

How can we tell we made the correct decision?
Watch the athlete’s body reaction immediately after the choke.

A key indicator is the loss of body control or visible instability.

In this case, the Korean athlete does not move her arms. She is conscious, aware of what is happening, but unable to react or move properly.

This is exactly why recognising these signals is so important for referees. Athlete safety must always come first.
