Some species are able to dive for their prey to a depth of about one meter, and some species dive to a depth of five meters. There are known cases of immersion of certain species to a depth of 10 meters or more. Therefore, albatrosses get food for themselves by hunting from the air and diving to a certain depth, depending on the species.

For a long period of time, experts were sure that albatrosses feed exclusively from the surface of the water, swimming on the surface and snatching various living creatures that turned out to be closer to the surface, as well as eating the remnants of food from other aquatic inhabitants. Thanks to the latest advances in science and technology, birds have managed to introduce capillary echo sounders and determine that these birds can hunt in the water column.

Small varieties are characterized by a darker plumage color, like a smoky or brown tone, and as for large species, their plumage color is almost white, while the presence of dark spots is noticeable in the head or wings. The nature of the plumage of albatrosses is quite dense and close to the body, while under the feathers there is warm fluff, like swans.
