Prawnicy dla Polski (The Lawyers for Poland) association has filed a criminal complaint with the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office alleging reasonable suspicion that Prime Minister Donald Tusk committed a criminal offence, with some members of the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) and court presidents also alleged to have been involved through incitement and aiding and abetting. The case concerns the Prime Minister’s countersignature on documents appointing more than 200 judicial assessors that had been issued by the President of Poland.

Five countries from the so-called “old EU” want to introduce “safeguard mechanisms” that would make it more difficult for conservative political forces to gain power in any member state. If such groups nevertheless succeed in taking power, the Berlin-Paris tandem – as these two capitals play the leading role in this arrangement – would ensure that their governments are maximally constrained.
