SpaceX will now review its data to understand why it couldn't fire all 33 engines on this occasion. It will also inspect the launch pad to see what, if any, damage occurred during the short firing. Previous, smaller-scale engine tests had fractured the concrete under the launch mount, requiring repairs.

Mr Musk has talked about an orbital attempt of the full Starship system in late February or March.

The ship, or upper-stage of the rocket, was removed for Thursday's test in case there was a catastrophic failure of the booster.

If Starship can be made to work it will be a game-changer, not just because of the mass it will be able to lift into space.

The concept is designed to be fully reusable, with both parts - the Super Heavy booster and the ship on top - coming back to Earth to fly, time and time again.

This means it could operate much like an airliner. The long-term cost savings compared with conventional, one-time-use rockets would be immense.

Archaeologists believe the stone would have originally measured more than two metres (6ft) tall. Just over a metre of it survives.

Anne MacInnes of North of Scotland Archaeological Society found the stone lying on the ground under vegetation last August.

Highland Council archaeologist Kirsty Cameron said at the time it was a "once-in-a-lifetime find".

The base and its 21 occupants are all secure. Officials see no need for an evacuation.

Concerns had been expressed that a major Emperor penguin colony near the breakaway could have been disrupted.

The Emperors breed on sea-ice attached to the coast - so-called "fast ice".

But the new Sentinel-2 picture clearly shows the stains from the birds' excrement, or guano, to be on an ice platform that remains intact.

Beach cleaner Emily Stevenson made the discovery and said the latest find was "really is in a league of its own".

Ms Stevenson, who co-founded Beach Guardian, was in Sennen, hosting a group clearing plastic from the dunes when she found the remains of a skull.

She said: "There have been times before, when I'm exploring hidden coves, or deep, dark caves filled with plastic, that I have worried about finding human remains. But it really wasn't expected on a popular beach like this."

Engineers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) say they have successfully modified a conventional diesel engine to use a mix of hydrogen and a small amount of diesel, claiming their patented technology has cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 85%.

It's the work of Prof Shawn Kook and his team at the university's School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

"The interest in converting an existing diesel engine into a clean-burning hydrogen engine is extremely high," Prof Kook tells the BBC at his laboratory in Sydney. Enquiries have come from Germany, South Africa, Brazil, Japan and China.

"These large igneous provinces, as we call them, coincided with changes in the climate and also mass extinctions," explained Prof Ferreira.

Nothing on that scale looks like it is about to happen under the area studied by Upflow, fortunately. But it's thought still to be an excellent laboratory.

Its siting was close to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where some of Earth's tectonic plates meet. The nearby continent of Africa would also influence how plumes would flow. The Upflow team hopes to publish its imagery in the next couple of years.

Dutch-Norwegian company SolarDuck, for example, is working with German energy company RWE to build a floating solar plant at a North Sea wind farm.

The company says it will be the biggest offshore floating solar plant in the world, with the capacity to power a few hundred homes.

The solar panels will sit on platforms raised several metres above the ocean surface. The plant, due to be operational in 2026, will use the existing cabling for the wind farm to send electricity back to the shore.

"We accept that there are good arguments for exploring alternative energy," she added. "But if our communities are affected by wind farms we feel they should be community owned."

The developer said it was talking about a community investment fund and supporting local economies .

Bute Energy's Aled Rowlands said: "Society is facing three crises: climate, cost of living and rebuilding the economy.

"Projects like this can help with all three," he said. "But there are a number of other different benefits that could come to this community.

But a recent Ofwat report pointed to a lack of investment by water companies. It named several that it said were "letting down customers and the environment" by not spending enough on improvements. Water UK responded saying that leakage was at "its lowest level since privatisation".

Leaks are a widespread and complicated problem: Across the UK, hundreds of thousands of kilometres of pipe - of varying age and in varying condition - supply millions of properties with water.

Colin Day from Essex and Suffolk Water said: "In [this region] alone, we look after more than 8,500km (5,282 miles) of pipe and only about half the leaks in those pipes are visible, which means it's complicated to pinpoint where [the rest] are."

The two lost satellites would have been among the most powerful European optical imagers in space, able to resolve details on the ground as small as 30cm across.

Airbus had previously lofted four Pléiades Neo satellites. The units five and six would have completed the planned constellation.

Arianespace is promising further details on the mishap in a media briefing later on Wednesday.

An independent commission will be set up to investigate what happened. Only after its findings are delivered and any remedies taken can Vega be expected to return to flight.
