Aesthetics of Pannonhalma Archabbey ⛪️

Photographer Kreisz Kálmán captured the sophisticated beauty of the library of Pannonhalma Archabbey: part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 50 monks still live today.

The oval hall’s ceiling features allegories of the four medieval university faculties: Law, Theology, Medicine, and the Arts.

Its collection has grown for centuries and now holds 400,000 volumes, including tens of thousands of 16th-century books, hundreds of manuscripts predating the printing press, a 13th-century Bible, and 19 codices, some dating back to the time of Saint László.

A bogrács mint magyar időgép: a nagy fekete fazék kultúrtörténete 🍲

Miért van az, hogy minél nagyobb a kánikula, a magyarokban annál erősebb a bizsergés, hogy tüzet rakjanak és felhozzák a pincéből a bográcsot? Eköré a zománcozott edény köré képesek vagyunk egész napos programot rittyenteni: elég hozzá egy kert, néhány ember, egy rakás fa és egy nagy fekete edény.

Aztán valaki hagymát aprít, valaki tüzet rak, valaki szerint túl sok víz került bele, valaki pedig már délután háromkor kijelenti, hogy hatra kész lesz. Hatkor természetesen még sehol sem tartunk.

The Cauldron as a Hungarian Time Machine: the cultural history of the big black pot

Why is it that the hotter the heat wave, the stronger the urge Hungarians feel to build a fire and bring the bogrács up from the cellar? We’re able to whip up an entire day’s program around this enameled pot: all it takes is a garden, a few people, a pile of wood, and a big black pot.

Then someone chops onions, someone builds a fire, someone thinks there’s too much water in it, and someone else declares as early as three in the afternoon that it’ll be ready by six. At six, of course, we’re nowhere near done.

The day Buda was free again after 145 years🏰

On this day 339 years ago, the Christian armies of the Habsburg-led Holy League broke through the walls of Buda, ending 145 years of Ottoman rule that had begun back in 1541. It came after a brutal, grinding siege, Buda was left in ruins.

Hungary’s fate hung on this siege succeeding, a failure here could have meant more generations under occupation, with no guarantee another chance would ever come.
