Few artefacts belonging to the founder of the city have survived.
One of them is the mace shown in the photograph.
It was a gift to the Swedish king John III Vasa from Jan Zamoyski, presented during the meeting of the kings at Reval in 1589. The ruler reportedly also received a gold-decorated saber, a bow with a sajdak (bow case and quiver) and… three Tatars.
The mace has a spherical, inverted pear-shaped steel head, made of two halves joined horizontally with copper solder. Its sides are faceted. In the middle there is a ring of hexagonal facets, and beyond it pentagonal facets tapering towards the poles. At the top there is a round steel plate with a screw in the centre (probably — no one has checked it; the museum itself has marked this with a question mark).
The shaft of the mace is cylindrical, made of two parts joined with copper solder. An uneven solder seam runs along the entire shaft and is also present at the head.
At its lower end, the shaft is bevelled; fitted onto it is a gilded silver grip, terminated at both ends with zigzag rings. At the very end there is a slightly flattened spherical finial, 40 mm in diameter and 28 mm high.
The decoration in low relief is punched and engraved (repoussé?), while the mount ornamentation was executed using the repoussé technique (?).
The grip is decorated with oval cartouches containing antiquizing figures of warriors; the spherical finial bears floral decoration within oval cartouches and in the fields between them.
Inside the grip there is a forward-tapering wooden rod, visible for a length of 514 mm, which is inserted into the shaft. The rod probably originally had a wrapping at the front (broken off?).
Shaft length: 420 mm; grip length: 123 mm.
