Arecibo hosts 5th ‘Shaping Future Baseball Players’ clinic

As part of municipal initiatives aimed at community and sports development, the fifth edition of the “Shaping Future Baseball Players” (“Formando Peloteros del Futuro”) sports clinic was held in Arecibo last week.

The latest edition of the clinic was dedicated to Jodam R. Rivera Bayón, a distinguished former baseball player from Arecibo.

The event took place Tuesday at the Ballajá sector park in the Sabana Hoyos neighborhood, where students from the Segunda Unidad Cayetano Coll y Toste school participated in a session dedicated to learning and strengthening fundamental baseball skills.

PR to send 6 athletes to road running worlds in Copenhagen

Carlos Guzmán, secretary general of the Puerto Rico Athletics Federation (FAPUR by its acronym in Spanish), announced late last week that six athletes from the island will compete Sept. 19-20 at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

While there, the athletes will also promote Toa Baja’s bid to host the championship in 2030.

“We arrive in Denmark with a committed delegation, prepared to represent Puerto Rico at the highest level,” Guzmán said in a written statement. “Beyond the competition itself, this experience will allow us to gain firsthand insight into the operations and logistics of a championship of this magnitude and begin laying the groundwork for Toa Baja’s 2030 bid.”

Pasarell: A tennis great with a disposition to serve

For all the glory that tennis great Charlie Pasarell gained on the court, the Puerto Rican-born member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame best remembers the lessons taught to him by his family, fellow competitors and mentors off the court, and how he turned those lessons into opportunities to serve others.

In fact, the title of his autobiography, written with the noted tennis historian Joel Drucker and published by New Chapter Press, reflects the dual purpose of his tennis life: “Serving First: Dreams Realized and Lessons Learned from Family, Friends and a Life in Tennis.”

Cassandra Wilson led jazz into the future with warmth and creative conviction

There is a quality of almost holy slowness in Cassandra Wilson’s music that belies the speed and force with which it changed jazz history.

Wilson’s was a voice that felt almost totally private, and yet somehow open to the listener: expressed without any unwilled labor, staggeringly lovely, robust but not satisfied. A guitarist as well as a vocalist who composed about half of the songs she recorded, Wilson represented a new kind of self-directed expression in jazz, and when she released her two wildly successful Blue Note albums in the mid-1990s, they almost seemed to announce the end of neo-traditionalism. On “Blue Light ’Til Dawn” (1993) and “New Moon Daughter” (1995), a commitment to blues tradition and a wider North American songbook sit at home in the ethic of a jazz musician, committed, moment-to-moment, to remaking sound.

Rising summer heat should spur us to action

Summer has long been known for its spirit of adventure and reprieve, found in fire hydrants and backyard sprinklers, campsites and lemonade stands. It was the time of year when the outdoors could be most fearlessly embraced.

Now summer has a new set of fixtures: face masks, air purifiers and public health alerts. Children stay home from camp on smoke days, a gleeless version of winter’s snow days. People who work outside have turned to salt packets and cooling vests. The notion of enduring the summer rather than embracing it has spread far beyond the Sun Belt.

Robust hiring reinforces strength of the US economy

Businesses in August shook off uncertainty related to higher gas prices, tariffs and artificial intelligence, unleashing an unexpected wave of hiring that affirmed the labor market’s health.

Employers added 162,000 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis last month, the Labor Department reported on Friday, and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. Job gains for June and July were revised upward by 55,000, bringing the average increase over the past three months to just over 70,000. And while the healthcare sector fueled much of the employment growth last year, last month’s gains touched even sectors that had appeared troubled, evidence of strength in the broader economy.

9 days after flood, two men are pulled alive from mud-filled tunnels in Nepal

The rescuers heard voices. They crawled through a sludge-filled tunnel deep underground where employees of a hydroelectric plant in Nepal had been trapped for nine days.

“We are coming!” Lt. Col. Ganga Baral, one of the leaders of the operation, said he had called out. “Don’t worry, the Nepali army is coming.”

Friday morning, two mud-caked survivors were rescued from the tunnels and hoisted into the open air, an extraordinary moment captured on video and in photos by the army.

How do you run for office in a gang war?

Gang violence in Haiti is so bad that Antoine Rodon Bien-Aimé, a candidate for the Haitian Senate, has been campaigning via speakerphone and video calls to community meetings.

Elections — the first in a decade — are scheduled for Dec. 13, but kidnappings and killings are pervasive. Bien-Aimé, a former deputy in the Legislature, rattled off the names of various neighborhoods around the capital where he cannot meet voters.

“We can’t go and campaign on the field,” he said. “We are scared. I am scared to drive. I am scared to go out of the house, because I’m scared to be kidnapped.”

From a secure, windowless room in northern Phoenix, technicians control the Colorado River water that sustains the United States’ largest desert metropolis.

The vast canal system the team oversees has for four decades conveyed an increasingly scarce commodity across 330 miles of rugged terrain to slake blossoming subdivisions, sprawling farmland and, in recent years, a powerhouse semiconductor industry. It supercharged Arizona’s economy and transformed Phoenix into one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities.
