¡Novedad!

"On Eating: The Making and Unmaking of My Appetites", by Alicia Kennedy ()

Sold out online — available at (58 Calle Taft)

As a girl, I ate like a king.

So begins beloved author, journalist, and influencer Alicia Kennedy's captivating new book. "On Eating" is more than a memoir; in true Alicia Kennedy style, it is also on desire, on the roles of women "in the kitchen," on domesticity, on diaspora, on foodways and food sovereignty, on home and how we find home through food, on how food can help us bring us back to those we love. Beautifully rooted in place—from Long Island (on oysters, on martinis) to San Juan (on plantains, on sugar), On Eating is not only a provocative bildungsroman and a celebration of appetite, it also challenges each of us to consider our own relationship with food, and how our need to eat—to live—impacts the world.

Ultimately, "On Eating" is a paean food and those who grow and cook it, asking the urgent questions in our world today about what and how we eat.

New arrival! "Futuromania: Electronic Dreams, Desiring Machines, and Tomorrow's Music Today", by Simon Reynolds

Disponible en casa-riel.com ↗ Music, Sound & Cinema

Simon Reynolds's first book in eight years is a celebration of music that feels like a taste of tomorrow. Sounds that prefigure pop music's future—the vanguard genres and heroic innovators whose discoveries eventually get accepted by the wider mass audience. But it's also about the way music can stir anticipation for a thrillingly transformed world just around the corner: a future that might be utopian or dystopian, but at least will be radically changed and exhilaratingly other.

Starting with an extraordinary chapter on Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer, taking in illuminating profiles of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Boards of Canada, Burial, and Daft Punk, and arguing for Auto-Tune as the defining sound of 21st century pop, "Futuromania" shapes over two dozen essays and interviews into a chronological narrative of machine-music from the 1970s to now. Reynolds explores the interface between pop music and science fiction's utopian dreams and nightmare visions, always emphasizing the quirky human individuals abusing the technology as much as the era-defining advances in electronic hardware and digital software.

A tapestry of the scenes and subcultures that have proliferated in that febrile, s*xy, and contested space where man meets machine, Futuromania is an enthused listening guide that will propel readers towards adventures in sound. There is a lifetime of electronic listening here.

"Witness to the Hellfire of Genocide: A Testimony from Gaza", by Wasim Said

Available in New Arrivals at casa-riel.com ↗

Unimaginable brutalities unfold within these brief pages, as a young man recounts the story of his world, obliterated. Twenty-two-year-old Wasim Said watched as his life was cast into constant danger when the Israeli occupation began its relentless and genocidal attacks on Gaza after October 7, 2023. In the short gasps between bombardments, Wasim picked up his pen to tell the stories of the atrocities he encountered at every turn: his family scrambling for food and shelter under gunfire, friends and neighbors brutally murdered as they tried to retrieve flour and false aid, the untold stories of those martyred at hospitals, schools, homes.

The stories are difficult to stomach. They are graphic, they are cruel, they are unbearable-just as the Israeli occupation has been since its inception. But as Wasim constantly turns to address the reader, these stories also contain a charge within them. What will you do now that you have the responsibility of knowing? What will you do now that you are a witness just like him?
