There is no safe place in Gaza. What Israel calls an “evacuation order” is, in reality, a sentence of forced displacement for thousands of exhausted families. On Sunday, Deir al-Balah, a city in the heart of the Strip, became the latest target of Israel’s military machine.

For months, this city had served as a so-called “refuge” for those fleeing relentless bombings in the north and south. Entire families arrived here hoping for a brief moment of safety. That hope was erased today when the Israeli occupation army announced its first ground operation in the area and ordered the evacuation of nine sectors in the southwestern part of the city, splitting Gaza’s narrow coastal strip in two and plunging even more people into chaos and fear.

The order, delivered by Israeli occupation military spokesperson Avichai Adraee, came with no mercy and no alternatives. Where are they supposed to flee, those who have already lost everything? What road to take when every path is a trap and every destination is temporary?

Hundreds of thousands of people are trapped between bombs, hunger, and the false promises of “safe zones.” Many have already been displaced once, twice, three times. They carry children, the elderly, and shattered dreams from one place to another, only to start all over again.

Pope Leo XIV made an urgent appeal to the world not to justify the “collective punishment” inflicted on Palestinians in Gaza, nor the forced displacement imposed by Israel in the besieged Strip. He called for the protection of civilians through strict respect for humanitarian law and strongly condemned the indiscriminate use of force.

The Pope also denounced the recent Israeli attack on the Holy Family parish in Gaza — the only Catholic church in the Strip — which left three people dead and several others injured. He stressed that this assault adds to the ongoing series of bombings targeting civilians and places of worship.

He renewed his call for an immediate end to the war and urged the international community to work toward a peaceful resolution to end the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health stated that unprecedented numbers of Palestinians of all ages are arriving at hospitals in a state of severe exhaustion due to the starvation imposed by the occupation.

In a statement, the ministry warned of an imminent risk of death threatening hundreds of starving people due to food shortages.

“A record number of starving citizens of all ages are arriving at emergency departments in a state of extreme fatigue and exhaustion,” the ministry said.

It warned that “hundreds of people whose bodies have become severely emaciated are at risk of certain death due to hunger, which has exceeded their bodies’ ability to endure.”

This warning comes as the Gaza Strip faces a severe famine since the crossings were closed in March.

Citizens can no longer secure the minimum necessities for survival, as most have lost access to the flour needed for bread-making, while the few available quantities on the black market have prices that starving Palestinians cannot afford.
