The Higher Presidential Committee lights the first candle of the “Red Candle” initiative from Bethlehem

In response to the “Red Candle” initiative, the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs lit today the first candle inside the Grotto of the Nativity in the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem. The gesture marks the beginning of a message of solidarity and hope for the Palestinian people, shared with the world.

From the Grotto of the Nativity — which has carried its message to the nations for more than two thousand years — Dr. Ramzi Khoury, member of the Executive Committee of the PLO and head of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs, emphasized that the red candle is being lit under a clear and direct slogan:

Peace… Justice… Solidarity…

He added:
“We light this candle to remind the world that peace can only be born where justice is upheld, and that solidarity is not a passing slogan but a commitment, a responsibility, and a clear stance with a people who suffer and who have never abandoned their mission of creating hope and preserving dignity.
From here, from Bethlehem, we say to all institutions, churches, and friends around the world: stand with us, stand with a people who seek their legitimate right to a secure life; with a Church that carries the oldest living Christian heritage on earth; and with a city that deserves to be treated in a way that reflects its history, sacredness, and the dignity of its inhabitants.”

Metropolitan Venediktos, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Vicar in Bethlehem, stated that this flame should serve as a message to every person seeking the face of God, and he called on the world to pray and stand with the protection of the oppressed.

Rula Khoury, representing the Telos Foundation, added:
“We invite everyone to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and to spread this initiative worldwide.”

The initiative was launched in direct coordination between the Presidential Committee for Church Affairs and the three heads of the status quo in the Church of the Nativity: Metropolitan Venediktos of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Father Marcello representing the Custody of the Holy Land, and Father Esbid Belyan, head of the Armenian Orthodox monastery. They emphasized the Christian unity in the city and the importance of conveying a message of solidarity from the heart of the Church of the Nativity, reaffirming the Church’s role in delivering the Christian voice to all who respect humanity and support the rights of the Palestinian people.

This step is part of an international initiative aimed at supporting the Palestinians’ right to live with dignity and freedom by lighting a red candle and sharing its photos or videos on social media.

It is a message of hope, a call for solidarity, and an appeal to stand with the Palestinian people in their pursuit of justice and peace, carrying messages of faith and resilience from the heart of Bethlehem to the world.
