Death toll from Elevador da Glória accident rises to 16.

One of the people injured in the accident at the Glória elevator in Lisbon died overnight, bringing the death toll from the disaster to 16, São José Hospital revealed today.

The derailment of the Glória elevator at the end of the afternoon on Wednesday also left 22 people injured, who were transported to the hospitals of São José, Santa Maria, São Francisco Xavier, Cascais and Amadora-Sintra.

According to São José Hospital, the General Multipurpose Emergency Department of this Local Health Unit (ULS) received nine injured people on Wednesday: five in serious condition and four in minor condition. One of the seriously injured died overnight.

The Embraer E190 of the Portuguese airline TAP aborted takeoff yesterday afternoon after approaching the runway at Madeira International Airport - Cristiano Ronaldo.

The aircraft, which was operating flight TP 1692, bound for Lisbon, was supposed to depart at 7:20 p.m., however, after aborting takeoff, the plane remains at the Madeira airport with an estimated departure of 12:53 a.m., according to FlightRadar.

DIÁRIO attempted to contact TAP about this situation, with the aim of understanding what may have motivated the cancellation of the take-off, but has not yet received a response.

The Achadas da Cruz cable car will be closed next week, between the 1st and 5th of September. According to the municipality of Porto Moniz, the infrastructure will be closed due to maintenance work. The municipality also states that during this period “the specific needs of farmers will be met, and to do so, they must contact the president of the local parish council in advance”.

So happy we managed to get off the island just before these problems started. Four flights that were scheduled to arrive at Madeira Airport this afternoon had to divert to other airports due to poor visibility in Santa Cruz, caused by fog. Wizz Air flights from Katowice, Poland, Tuifly flights from Munich, Germany, and Transavia flights from Paris, France, were diverted to Porto Santo, where they are awaiting improved weather conditions in Madeira. The Tuifly flight from Düsseldorf, Germany, diverted to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

Four crew members of a Spanish sailboat that caught fire about 180 kilometers northeast of Porto Santo were rescued today and taken to a hospital in Madeira, said the Navy, which coordinated the operation. In a statement, the Navy reported that the alert was received at 4:59 am, having immediately sent the ship NRP Zaire, the helicopter EH-101 and the C-295 aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force to the scene.
