🇬🇧 Funny how someone can be “allergic to the sun” until you’re no longer together.

And sometimes client relationships are a little like that too.

You can have the ideas, you can see the opportunities, you can know exactly what you’d like to try. But if every idea gets shut down and your hands are tied, there’s only so much you can do.

Then the relationship ends and suddenly... someone else is doing exactly what you suggested.

Maybe it was never the ideas. Maybe it was the relationship.

〰️〰️⠀

🇬🇧We've been putting hashtags on our posts. The data says we should stop.

Metricool went through more than 24 million Instagram posts and found that posts using at least one hashtag got around 32% fewer views and 34% fewer interactions than the average. Not a rounding error. A third.

Some context before anyone rips them out of every caption. This is correlation, not proof of punishment: accounts that lean on hashtags often lean on them precisely because reach is already weak. But the platform side of the story points the same way. Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags, capped how many you can use, and now indexes the words in your caption directly.

Which is the actual lesson. The caption became the search field. Writing "sunset dinner in Lagos" as a normal sentence now does more for you than tagging it.

We're cutting ours down and watching what happens. If you've been adding twenty out of habit, this is your permission to stop.

Data from Metricool's Instagram Study.

〰️〰️

🇬🇧 Social platforms quietly changed jobs.

They used to show your content to your followers. Now they're recommendation engines: each post gets tested on whoever is most likely to engage with it, follower or not.

Which means every post competes alone. Your last one earning reach doesn't carry the next one. And a big chunk of the people who see any given post have never heard of you.

The practical consequence changes how you write. Posts that assume context ("as we announced last week...") die with strangers. Inside references die with strangers. Every post needs to introduce you, make its point and land, all on its own, to someone seeing your name for the first time.

Your next customer probably doesn't follow you. Post like it.

〰️〰️

Publique a pensar nele.

🇬🇧 LinkedIn has published a guide on how to get your content cited by AI chatbots. Which tells you plenty about where things are heading.

The useful part isn't the framework they've branded. It's one line buried in it: long-form articles published on LinkedIn get cited by AI far more often than feed posts. Freshness counts too. Something written this month beats something written two years ago.

So the thing most companies never touch, the article feature nobody uses, is the format that actually feeds the machines.

Meanwhile the average Portuguese business treats LinkedIn as the place to announce new hires. That's an open goal.

One long piece a month, written by whoever actually knows the subject, saying something specific. That's the whole tactic.

〰️〰️

🇬🇧 "So you just need to come up with fun ideas, right?" Not quite.

There's a myth about marketing: that it's a purely creative job, all about waiting for the brilliant idea to strike. The creative part is real, of course. But it comes at the end, not the start.

Before the idea, there's work nobody sees: looking at the data, understanding the client, the audience and the goals. Only then do the ideas show up, and they show up already fitting what the business actually needs.

The opposite, which is what a lot of people do, is to have a fun idea and then try to force it to fit. Sometimes it works. Most of the time, it looks nice and goes nowhere.

Good ideas don't fall from the sky. They come out of the analysis. That's why, when we say a campaign makes sense, it isn't a guess: it's because the numbers, the client and the objective all point to the same place.

Marketing is creativity with a foundation. And the foundation comes first.

Ever been sold "ideas" with no analysis behind them? Tell us in the comments.

〰️〰️

A parte criativa existe, claro.

🇬🇧The tourists are leaving and this whiteboard is filling up.

September at Salty looks like this: autumn campaigns, new websites kicking off, content plans for the season everyone else forgot to prepare. While the country catches its breath, marketing starts sprinting.

If July is when businesses make money, September is when they decide how much they'll make next July.

🇬🇧 Social media is where people discover products, but not where most prefer to buy them.

ESW surveyed 23,000 shoppers across 18 markets. Half discover products on social media, rising to three quarters among Gen Z. Yet only 6% prefer to buy there. Nearly a third go to the brand’s website to complete the purchase.

The journey is simple: they discover you on Instagram, check your reviews, then buy where they feel comfortable.

Your feed is the shop window. Your website is the till.
A great Instagram means little if your website is slow, confusing or difficult to navigate.

Post to get found. Fix the website to get paid.
