Sobreiras – Alentejo Country Hotel
Design By FAT – Future Architecture Thinking | Photography By João Morgado

Only an hour from Lisbon and a few minutes from Grândola village, the rural context within which the property belongs greatly favored by the particular beauty of the site, determined the guiding concept – to promote the enjoyment of nature and the discovery of the regional culture.

The design is by architect Miguel Correia, along with its multidisciplinary team from FAT – Future Architecture Thinking. The concern for the preservation and improvement of physical and morphological characteristics of the site, dictated the basic principles of intervention: a simple and elegant design inspired by the surrounding nature with the richness of landscapes and flavors of Alentejo. The purpose was to value and favor the rural environment surrounding the hotel, taking it as theme, seeking to provide a space to enjoy the countryside, full of comfort and quiet, in a simple and contemporary atmosphere.

In the hilltop chosen to deploy the hotel, the view extends panoramically facing east. The mountain fauna is revealed in the sounds which inhabit the fields. The constantly changing sky transforms the landscape multiplying its views. The arrangement of the existing trees on the implantation site led to dividing it into several modules among the trees, preserving and protecting the forest heritage, while taking advantage of this unique nature setting.

The hotel consists of eight volumes “gently resting” above the ground through a suspended structure that minimizes soil sealing and the extent of the area affected by the foundations.

The largest volume contains the entrance and reception and also a set of public and lounge areas. Smaller volumes include staff facilities, technical, storage and service areas. The remaining 5 volumes of approximately equivalent size, features 22 rooms and 2 suites, all with wide spaces, minimal design and private terraces, arranged in sets of 4 or 5 units, providing all the comfort and privacy to enjoy the peaceful countryside.

DURASPORT
Designed By Ministry Of Design

MOD has completed a 183sqm ‘ultra-performance’ retail store, named “Durasport” in Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore. Featuring an immersive, futuristic R&D lab environment for sports enthusiasts to try out the sportswear and equipment before buying them, the products were co-curated by MOD, and include the world’s lightest racing bicycle, heat-moldable customized cycling shoes, wet suits which minimize stretch resistance, adjustable alpine ski boots suitable for scaling uphill slopes as well as downhill skiing and a power breather for swimmers which enhances lap times.

How do you make a brick and mortar sports store relevant in the 21st century?’

In a mature market like Singapore where online shopping is prevalent and there is no shortage of established multi-label sports stores; we had to ask ourselves this question when approached by our client to create DURASPORT, a sports retail brand and its flagship store.

Foundationally, we began by honing the positioning of the brand through an extensive analysis of the sporting goods market as well as our client’s existing brand and product inventory. From the information gained, we narrowed down and eventually identified a market segment that at present remains relatively untapped: the ‘ultra-performance’ athlete & sporting enthusiast. Once these critical positioning and brand decisions were made, they became the project’s “North Star”, referred to and applied downstream to the choice of brands and products to carry, user experience journey, spatial planning, 3D form exploration, material and lighting selection, display system design, brand name, logo and collaterals, and overarching visual identity.

Key to the in-store experience is a 3-stage retail strategy to ‘excite, immerse and (subsequently) convince’ the customer. To draw foot traffic for any new-to-market brand, the storefront design has to excite. Conceived to be more than a typical retail frontage with large display windows, Durasport’s facade is instead designed to appear as if in dynamic motion, conveying a sense of active, ultra-high performance sporting activities.

Butterfly Residence

Design By William Duff Architects |Photography By Matthew Millman

This relaxing oasis for an intercontinental couple with busy careers in technology and their two young children blurs indoors and outdoors. Located in a neighborhood of similarly-scaled homes, near Silicon Valley’s intellectual and financial hub, the house features an H-shaped plan that maximizes its 1,012 sq.meter lot size.

The material palette features a variety of environmentally-sustainable wood species: the façade for the two-story main volume is clad in Western Red Cedar, while the flanking one-story volumes are made from smooth-troweled integral color stucco. This massing opens up in the rear of the house through fully-retractable, floor-to-ceiling glass doors to an Ipe deck courtyard and surrounding garden. Internal spaces feature a similarly-layered palette of fumed-oak wood floors, stained vertical grain Douglas-fir paneling, stained Tay Koto veneer cabinets, and a stained white oak wood stair.

McKinley Bungalow
Designed Photography By Nicole Franzen

Studio Robert McKinley has unveiled the McKinley Bungalow, an intimate, curated residence in Montauk, New York. Available for rent, the four bedroom, 3-bathroom home is thoughtfully outfitted with furniture and objects that imbue the sensibility of Studio Robert McKinley, all available for purchase.

Created with a sense of approachable luxury, Studio Robert McKinley drew inspiration from Montauk’s wild and salt-weathered coastline, as well as the casual elegance of Europe’s seaside towns where centuries old cultures exude rich color and pattern. Interior and exterior spaces are designed with bedding, linens, furniture, house wares, appliances and accessories from the studio’s most beloved brands.

Originally built in 1978, the 1900-square foot ranch style house has a clean white palette with natural oak floors. Architectural details such as exposed beams and a plaster fireplace add character, while sleek fixtures such as LED lighting and silver honed countertops are seamlessly integrated to bring a modern edge. Open living areas, a key component of the floor plan, reinforce the intention of gathering. A central living and kitchen area flanks the dining room along with a library drenched in deep red lime wash paint and rattan furniture. An inviting Moroccan daybed lined with pillows brings in a tranquil softness, as do linen curtains. The kitchen, outfitted with PITT cooking appliances is meant for creating intimate parties with neighbors and friends.

Exterior details like a mahogany deck, shiplap siding and a sprawling lawn complete the property. Seagrass and white hydrangeas give an Italian seaside garden feel, framed by a u-shaped driveway. A barbecue area in the backyard is perfect for outdoor entertaining around a custom dining table. Centrally located in Montauk in a residential neighborhood, the Bungalow is a five-minute drive to DitchPlains, a popular beach for sunbathers and surfers alike.

Dorado Beach
By Wilson Associates

Once a plantation purchased by Laurance S. Rockefeller in the 1950s, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has been restored to deliver a transformative guest experience rooted in cultural immersion. The refreshed look offers a reinterpretation of the previous architecture and brings back the glamour of the historic estate. As the second Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the world and the first in the Western Hemisphere, the Reserve now showcases expanded public facilities and updated beachfront guest rooms and suites, conceived by Wilson Associates’ Dallas studio. The global interior architectural design firm reunited the original team that oversaw the design of this World Class, award-winning luxury property almost 10 years ago.

As the pioneering resort for the Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio in the Americas, Dorado Beach, retains its sophisticated residential-inspired aesthetic, originally conceived by the Rockefellers. The Rockefeller family had transformed the plantation into a resort and introduced clean, modern architectural lines that blended into the surrounding lush landscape. The Wilson Associates’ design team—led by Design Director, Principal Michael Crosby; Associate Design Director Liz Dauwe; and Project Designer, FF&E, Veronica Sandoval—conceived a modern concept inspired by the Livingston era, Rockefeller legacy, Puerto Rico’s rich Taino presence, and original visionary design criteria. Thoughtful design and handcrafted touches delivered to the public spaces and a reimagined color palette for the 114 beachfront guest rooms and suites enhance the guest experience.

To complement the breathtaking location of the beachfront guest rooms and suites, Wilson Associates created a layout and provided expansive glass pocket doors that take full advantage of the vista and emphasize the strong connection between the indoors and outdoors. The design team also introduced a wide variety of neutral tones, vibrant colors and textures to the accommodations, inspired by the surrounding sand, sea, sky, tropical grounds, and even the color of the back of the crabs that roam the beach. World Class Olympic Pool

Designed By Vox Architects || Photography By Sergey Ananiev

World Class – the Russian fitness club chain announced a contest for the best concept of a new chain of fitness clubs. VOX Architects won this competition and decided to create a unique modern space with an individual character for comfortable and effective sports.

It was important to achieve the perfect balance between the different areas of the club: to emphasize the ease of the halls for practicing yoga and pilates, to make correct accents in the halls for martial arts and power loads, and, of course, to create an ideal atmosphere in the swimming pool.

The project provides for the reconstruction of an already existing pool, so the goal was to implement the project as soon as possible without interrupting the club’s operation for a long time. At the core of the World Class concept is a strong contrast of shapes, materials and colors, giving rise to a powerful dynamic.

The pool is divided into two main zones: the entrance zone with a lowered ceiling – red-saturated – sensual, carnal and material and, the main zone of the pool – with raised arches and smooth white forms, flying, weightless standing on a large blue water field. The light concept is determined by the absence of visible and rigidly-directed light sources: interior light is diffuse and full of reflections from large shapes and planes.

Big Mouth House
Designed By Best Practise Architecture

Developed by three Seattle architects, this small multi-family project is a modern take on what a versatile, forward-thinking, multi-family living can look like. Each unit within the project is a flexible urban home with a studio space on the lower level, a main living area upstairs and a rooftop deck to take advantage of Seattle’s unbeatable city views.

Kailin Gregga of Best Practice Architecture paired with Rob Humble of Hybrid Architecture and Steven Lazen (acting as a sole practitioner) to transform what was a single-family residential lot in Seattle’s Central District into three townhomes (one unit at 1,850 square feet and two additional units at 1,420 square feet each). All three units share a lush walkway along the south side of the 5,760 square foot lot. The pathway stretches from the front sidewalk to the communal parking area in the rear alley. Black vertical metal cladding envelops the exterior–bringing a cohesiveness to the three attached homes–and continues as a 2×2 black painted fence that surrounds the site. Custom pink powder-coated panels and railing provide pops of color to enliven the dark facade. Entries to each unit are painted with bright colors and accented with pink signage. And for even more color, the rooftop areas are covered in a geometric mural by Seattle artist SAM WOOD WILSON.

All three units were designed with a lower level income Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). These ADU’s are connected to the interior of the townhomes, but also come equipped with a separate entrance. This unique feature can be used as an extension of the family home (a guest suite, office,or family room) or as a rental apartment. With this flexible space, homeowners can accommodate an expanding family or use it to generate additional income with as a short or long term rental.Units A and B feature interiors by Rob Humble. The ADU units are located on the lower level and can be accessed from either a lockable interior door or from a separate exterior entrance. This floor also includes a small storage space. The second level has two bedrooms and a bathroom. On the third floor, visitors will find a main liv @ Central District, Seattle

California Modern

Designed By CM Natural Designs || Photography By Chipper Hatter

The client is a young, vibrant family with ultra-modern taste. Their aesthetic is consistently bold, simple and high contrast. Not only is that style fun to design within but this client is particularly trusting which really allowed CM to go all the way with the design.

Their original kitchen was massively outdated and low-functioning. The goals were to increase their storage and counter space, create a more open feel and add interest through materials and contrast. By moving the majority of the appliances to the side wall, they were able to clear up the focal wall in the kitchen and add some much-needed symmetry. The quartz counter, which extends up the wall and serves as the backsplash, added continuity and a large-scale organic looking element to an otherwise geometric design. The wood hood brings in warmth, while the light fixture and stools take the modern feel to the next level.

The master bathroom was part of a new addition and had many of the same aesthetic goals as the kitchen. Keeping with a simple black and white palate, it was important that balance was maintained so that the design did not become too blocky. By placing black on the floor for grounding but using a hex-shaped tile for interest and then repeating that with a smaller version into the shower floor. The white shower wall tile, lets the black-gridded shower divided pop and the graphic tile on the bench and niche bring interest and a feeling of customization to an otherwise simple finish selection. The floating vanity gives the bathroom a more spacious feel and the teak floor and wall detail bring the warmth that was also needed in the kitchen but help celebrate and divide out the tub area which may otherwise feel a little tight.

Ernesto Artillo is an artist, photographer and art director based in Madrid, Spain. He has collaborated with fashion brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Delpozo, Pepe Jeans, Mango, Adolfo Domínguez, Swarovski, Oysho, Harvey Nichols, Izzue, Printemps Paris, Yves Rocher, Six Lee…

Beyond the commercial side of his work, he develops his personal artistic creations where conversation between art, emotion and aesthetic is always present. He has exhibited his personal work in cities such as Saint Petersburg, Mumbai, Korea, Hong Kong, Beijing and several Spanish cities.

He was born in Málaga, where he originally learned from his father, a collage artist himself. He raised him between oil painting lessons and a visual repertory of paintings and an artistic environment.

Later, during his studies in Advertising he began to take photos, focusing on fashion. Once graduated he participated on a national contest of advertising creativity which allowed him to work in one of the best advertising agencies in Madrid.

Few years later he started working for an independent international male fashion magazine, where he worked for three years doing every kind of jobs, from interviewing musicians or designers to shooting fashion editorials, making collages or writing articles. Now all these disciplines -photography, advertising, painting, fashion, culture and collage conform his creations.

“I like to feel relaxed but excited when I see my work. In my personal life is very similar, I look for the balance but how to break it too.”

Citing a pantheon of inspirations that includes classic sculptures, Renaissance, Modern art, flamenco and Spanish culture, music, beauty or true love, Artillo’s images are at once a celebration of the details of a collection, while at the same time positioning modern day icons onto classical, religious or surrealist backgrounds.
