A Message to the Bangladeshi Community in Portugal.
To those who claim to be the "leaders" of the Bangladeshi community: you do not represent us. Many of us do not acknowledge or care about these so-called leaders. We didn’t come abroad to engage in politics or maintain a community structure. We came here for a well-structured life, to work hard, and to live peacefully.
Let us make one thing clear: do not judge Bangladeshis based on the actions or behavior of a few individuals, especially in areas like Martim Moniz. Bangladesh is not a country of chaos or violence, and fighting is not a normal part of our culture. Stop spreading false narratives and misleading people. Have some dignity and self-respect.
If you live in another country, respect its laws and culture. If you can’t abide by the rules, then perhaps you should reconsider your presence here. The actions of a few should not lead to discrimination or racism against the rest of us. Remember, this is their country, and we are immigrants here.
To those claiming to be political leaders or community representatives: who gave you that authority? You are not qualified to speak for all Bangladeshis in Portugal. If anyone should represent us, it should be the Ambassador of Bangladesh—not self-proclaimed leaders running Mini Mercados or working as brokers and translators.
We, the settled and hardworking Bangladeshis in Portugal, want nothing to do with your politics or community-based leadership. Do not tarnish the image of our country or its people. Bangladeshis are peaceful, industrious individuals, workaholic and your actions should not risk our reputation.
Let’s focus on building a positive, respectful image of Bangladesh in Portugal.
