"Estimates vary but a study by the University of Cambridge estimates the annualised consumption of energy by Bitcoin (for example) to be in the region of 133.65TWh — approximately 0.6% of global energy usage. ⚡️

Responses to such figures vary — those within the Bitcoin community point out that the justification for such energy depends on a value judgment — whether the technology serves a useful purpose or not.

As a potential alternative to the conventional financial establishment and the world’s FIAT currencies, the energy consumed by Bitcoin could be seen as minimal — Ark Investment Management estimates that this is less than 10% of the combined energy used by the conventional banking system, for example.

Regardless of the justifications provided by blockchain enthusiasts and whether or not these satisfy the critics, most agree that excessive energy usage is not a good thing.

We’re all concerned for the long-term future of the planet and the threats presented by climate change are significant — any measures that can reduce energy usage would seem to be a good thing. 🌍

One such measure is the idea of a Proof-of-Stake blockchain — a technology that will feature within The Docking phase of the upgrade of Ethereum to Ethereum 2.0, scheduled for 2022.

Within this article, I’ll explain in the simplest terms possible how Proof-of-Stake works to illustrate why it could offer advantages in making blockchain computing less energy-hungry. There are other effects of it to consider too."

"On June 30th Sotheby’s held an online auction offering an NFT representing the original source code for the Internet, as written by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee. 💻

Approximately 9,500 lines of computer code constituting the original world wide web were immortalised as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) in the blockchain. This was offered for sale together with a 30-minute animated visualisation of the code, a digital poster of the code, and a digital letter written by Berners-Lee in June 2021 reflecting on his invention.

Auctioned with a reserve price of just $1000 the NFT eventually sold for a high bid of $5.4 million. The price paid represents the premium that the new owner of the NFT presumably places on notionally ‘owning’ the moment in time when the Internet came into being.

The various use-cases for NFT technology are continuing to emerge. The sale of the Internet source code NFT demonstrates one further way that blockchain may yet be used — to irrefutably and immutably record moments in time. NFTs can be used to immortalise these moments as tokens that can then be bought and sold as desirable collectibles and status-symbols."

"British artist Damien Hirst is best known for art that features preserved animals. His piece entitled 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living' created in 1991 features a Tiger Shark carcass suspended in a tank of formaldehyde. It has been displayed in London’s leading contemporary art galleries and was reportedly sold for at least $8 million in 2004. 🦈

Hirst’s creations demonstrate two key principles of art:
- Art becomes art through an implicit agreement reached between its creator and those who consume it.
- What gives art value is a collective understanding between the creator and those willing to exchange something of equivalent value to own it or experience it.

Those two principles apply to the concept of money too — Hirst’s latest project will prove that theory. I’m particularly excited that in doing so he’s going to demonstrate that the same principles apply to NFTs as to conventional art, and to cryptocurrency as well as conventional money."

Jerry Garcia, the founder and lead singer of the Grateful Dead, also was a pioneering digital arts. He had studied visual arts in San Francisco and was an early adopter of Macintosh computers as a medium to create digital art. 😍

Garcia’s digital images still feel creative and build, despite the fact that the last pieces were made in 1995. 😲

In celebration of Garcia’s art being made public, some of his works will be sold as NFTs on the music-focused NFT marketplace on August 5.

The full 20-piece collection "An Odd Little Place, The Digital Works of Jerry Garcia (1992-1995)" will be displayed at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 🎸

“The night Dali and Duchamp visited my dreams” 🌗 by
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to the artist, “It was a warm night in July and I had just drifted into a lucid dream. I wandered aimlessly through a place that felt oddly familiar. I stumbled across two other beings who happened to be Dali and Duchamp. I laughed at first. More of a "what is going on" type of laugh. This couldn't possibly be happening, could it? Neither of them had ever been in my dreams before, let alone both at the same time. I had to soak up as much of this experience as I could knowing this wouldn't last nearly as long as I hoped it would, nothing does. We drifted through the night shapeshifting into this and that, discussing love, art and life. There was this feeling I couldn't describe that flooded my entire being as we walked across the water as if we had done it hundreds of times before. Something felt... right? I felt at ease for the first time in a while. Almost forgot what that could feel like. Right as I was about to ask for some advice, I woke up. Angry at first. What did any of that mean? What a blessing to experience and what a curse to not know the meaning of. Life kept going and I felt rejuvenated once more. Onward.”

This NFT artwork is available on .co.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
