Today is World Hepatitis Day.

ℹ️ Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can lead to severe liver disease and liver cancer. Among people who inject drugs, hepatitis C carries the highest disease burden. Hepatitis B is also more prevalent in this group than in the general population.

Eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030 is a target set under the UN Sustainable Development Goal on Health.

📊 Our viral hepatitis elimination barometer tracks 11 key indicators to assess national progress in this area.

While some countries are making headway, many are still falling short of elimination goals. Achieving elimination targets will require increased investment in harm reduction services, as well as testing and treatment for viral hepatitis.

📈 Synthetic cathinones: rising availability and growing risks in Europe

In 2023, 37 tonnes of synthetic cathinones were seized across Europe — up from just 4.5 tonnes in 2021. These substances are increasingly found on the drug market, often intentionally purchased, and may pose serious health risks due to their potency and unpredictability.
