Rosh's traumatic birth wasn't the end of her motherhood troubles. It triggered early menopause.

Rosh was fit, healthy, and ran health policy for an insurance body. On the face of it, you might have expected her to find the transition to motherhood easy.

Instead, both of her pregnancies show something that is invisible to many of us: the physical cost many women pay to become mothers.

We talk about the induction she didn’t need and the c-section that followed, being told by her own doctor that a second pregnancy was impossible, and why even her closest friends never shared their own birth stories with her.

This is the final part of my matrescence series, and it’s the one I wanted to end on.

When something is so normal to you, it can be hard to see...

That's what happens with the scripts we inherit from our family. We believe this is just the way things are - until we realise they are not.

When we leave the family home, we might realise that our way of looking at the world is only one of many. When we clash with people with different values or communication styles.

Or when we do a simple exercise like the one Carla Hoppe taught me.
