Daya is a Sanskrit word usually translated as empathy or compassion. It is a concept present in Hinduism and Sikhism in which a relationship is created with the suffering of others, with a direct identification with their experiences.
Marta Rodrigues and Bernardo Tinoco started working as a duo in 2021, seeking to explore the musical relationship between the saxophone and the voice to its fullest extent, through sound textures, free improvisations, arrangements, and compositions intended for acoustic and sometimes electronic instrumentation.
Daya's repertoire is characterized by the duality between acoustic and electronic sound and by the influence of stylistic currents as distinct as the Baroque period and non-idiomatic improvisation. The writing of compositions that prioritize free improvisation and original texts, in parallel with the creation of sound textures through audio processing and the use of samples, aims to direct the music towards flat and meditative environments that reflect the concept and meaning of the word that gives the project its name. Considering electronics as an essential element in achieving the desired sound, it became clear that an artist experienced in the creation and performance of electroacoustic music needed to be added. The invitation to João Hasselberg came after sharing the stage with him in different projects and musical contexts. In this way, the division of roles between the three multi-instrumentalists enabled composition and improvisation based on a rich and comprehensive timbral spectrum.
