Em 1942, uma professora belga chamada Andrée Geulen foi colocada diante de uma escolha. Em sua sala de aula, algumas crianças usavam a estrela amarela — símbolo criado para marcá-las, envergonhá-las e isolá-las por serem judias.
No dia seguinte, Andrée tomou uma decisão silenciosa, mas poderosa: mandou todas as crianças usarem um avental, escondendo completamente as estrelas. Por algumas horas, não havia divisão, não havia rótulos. Havia apenas crianças.
Esse pequeno gesto de rebeldia transformou-se em algo muito maior. Andrée uniu-se ao Comitê de Defesa dos Judeus e começou a convencer pais desesperados a deixarem que ela escondesse seus filhos — muitas vezes, a única chance de sobrevivência. Abrigou doze crianças em sua própria escola e ajudou a salvar mais de mil antes do fim da guerra.

I want to tell you how I feel. Every day, I see humans cuddling their dogs and cats, treating them like family and giving them love, safety, and kindness. I see how softly they stroke their fur, how they talk gentle words, and make sure they are never hungry or scared. But when it comes to me, I feel so different and so hurt. I don't understand why humans pick me up just to put a fork in me and eat me for dinner. I feel pain when I’m kept in tight spaces, and I get scared when I hear loud noises and see metal things that hurt. I wish someone would hold me and tell me it’s okay, instead of looking at me as just food. My heart feels heavy because I want to live and be loved too. When I see tears in my eyes, it's because I know life could be better if humans saw how much I want to be treated kindly, just like the dogs they cuddle and the cats they adore. I feel sad because being me means always worrying about what’s next, and instead of a gentle hand, I’m afraid of the fork and the knife. Please think about how different my life could be if you chose kindness and saw me for the friend I could be, not just a meal on the table."
