The Gramaxo Foundation is a museum conceived with the purpose of archiving and sharing. A place where memory is preserved, where time takes form, and where the past remains alive through matter, structure, and light.

On December 11, AMAG celebrates fourteen years of editorial work. And it is precisely on this date that we will present the book dedicated to Álvaro Siza’s Gramaxo Foundation, and the photography exhibition by João Rey, in a coincidence that is not accidental but deliberately aligned in both chronology and symbolism.

Presenting this book and exhibition on AMAG’s anniversary reinforces what has been our purpose for more than a decade:
to build an editorial archive that documents, and celebrates architecture.

(…) I could continue describing the remarkable way in which Siza transforms the place, achieving a harmony between the existing and the new, between the built and the natural, as an enhancement of the territory in which the new simultaneously becomes an inseparable part of what is already there. However, what struck me most in this first project on which I collaborated, was the intelligence and sensitivity with which Siza interpreted an responded to the commission.

Siza created a large house rather, and not a small museum. (…)

(…) First and foremost, the Gramaxo Foundation building, is an act of understanding the site. In the centre city of Maia, amidst the intensity of urban life, an extensive garden enclosed by a granite wall endures. Within this wall, surrounded by dense vegetation, the building emerges.

I could continue describing the remarkable way in which Siza transforms the place, achieving a harmony between the existing and the new, between the built and the natural, as an enhancement of the territory in which the new simultaneously becomes an inseparable part of what is already there. However, what struck me most in this first project on which I collaborated, was the intelligence and sensitivity with which Siza interpreted an responded to the commission.
