Luana and Huber,

I have been reflecting carefully on how best to explain why the house should be white. I asked myself whether this might simply be a matter of personal preference, my taste versus yours, without any logical or rational justification. Yet if we were to rely
solely on subjective arguments, we would never arrive at a decision; as the popular saying goes, taste is not open to debate.
For this reason, I sought explanations within the discipline of architecture itself that might substantiate the choice of white.
Le Corbusier once stated that only good architecture can truly be painted white, because white reveals everything:
it makes both the beautiful and the flawed unmistakably visible.

Borrowing his words:
“Whitewash exists wherever peoples have preserved intact the balanced construction of a harmonious culture. (…)

What if it is not the buildings themselves but events embedded in our collective memory that determine the identity?

In the National Holocaust Museum, the buildings, the new museum programme, and the commemoration of historical events on this site come together in the design.

MENDES WOOD DM
São Paulo, Brazil

As an industrial hall, the greenery had to be created. A topographic, humid interior garden, covered in mosses and
succulents, was introduced to connect the internal areas with the exhibition hall. Like a small oasis, it manifests in two ways: from the main hall, it is seen at a distance, framed as a tropical
landscape; in more intimate areas, it functions as a plaza, a central space for circulation, gathering, and rest, and is fundamental for natural light and ventilation throughout the complex.

The intervention starts from this pre-existing condition: a volume with a single façade measuring 14 metres, a maximum depth of 23 metres, and 267 m² of interior area, covered by a pitched roof. The lateral and rear façades are blind, with the openings concentrated on the main elevation facing the street. This condition determined one of the main challenges of the project, introducing light and ventilation into the deep interior of the building.

The creation of patios and skylights reorganises the two floors spatially and establishes new visual and functional relationships between the different rooms, ensuring natural lighting and ventilation.

The adopted typology references the Roman house with an impluvium. The central patio becomes the structuring element of domestic life, articulating a spatial continuity between interior and exterior. (...)

During the initial site visit, we encountered João, a nine-year-old boy who lived nearby and possessed an intimate knowledge of the place. He pointed toward the riverbanks and insisted that we should explore the “islands.”

We followed him along the margin, clearing a path through dense vegetation, until we discovered two small islets concealed by the undergrowth. This experience broadened our understanding of the intervention area and led us to conceive a spatial sequence that would enable the progressive discovery of the site, mirroring the manner in which it had been revealed to us under João’s guidance.
