Peace began the day I stopped abandoning myself just to avoid being alone.

We danced at the edge of everything.
And then… then we followed the light. ✨

Have a good weekend.

There are moments when a wave ends.
And there are others when that’s where everything begins.
These images were captured during one of the most violent storms to hit Nazaré in the last two years.

Gabriel Sampaio is towed into a giant wave by Rafael Tapia. For a few seconds, everything seems under control. Until, near the end of the ride, a section of the lip collapses and hits him with full force.

But the real nightmare was only beginning.

A second mass of water approaches diagonally and meets the wave exactly where Gabriel is. Trapped between two forces converging on him, he is literally swallowed by the ocean.

The board resurfaces.
Gabriel doesn’t.

And while tons of water continue moving above him, he remains somewhere beneath that enormous mass of whitewater.

Then another wave comes.
And another. And another.

Rafael tries to reach him, but the sheer amount of foam and moving water makes the rescue extremely difficult. Gabriel ends up taking around three or four waves on the head before Daniel Rangel, finally manages to reach him and pull him out.

He made it out in one piece.

Battered by the ocean, certainly — but in one piece.

And this is exactly where these images reveal something that often remains outside the frame.

Big-wave surfing is never just one man and one wave.

Behind every attempt stands an entire team: jet ski pilots, safety and rescue crews, spotters positioned on the cliff, constant communication, and countless hours of physical and mental training.

Because when something goes wrong in Nazaré, every second counts.

It is that preparation, that absolute trust between everyone involved, and that invisible team behind every wave that allows moments like this to end as a story that can be told — rather than something else.

Gabriel walked away unharmed.

And we were left with these images to remind us of one thing:

In Nazaré, sometimes the hardest part isn’t catching the wave.
It’s coming back from it.

Give tomorrow a chance to prove there was still light.

In 2012, I lost one of my best friends to su***de.
With him, a part of me changed forever too.

We all find different ways to accept and carry a loss. I can only speak for myself: it changed me deeply, and it is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
It was a loss that took me through some of the hardest moments of my life.

But something kept me going.
A greater force. A small light that refused to go out.

Today, 14 years later, I understand these words differently:

As long as there is light, fight for it.

For those who left.
For those who stayed.
And for those who are still trying to stay.

Let’s pay more attention to one another.
Not everyone who is struggling shows it. Sometimes, right beside us, someone is smiling while fighting a battle no one else can see.

A single word can make all the difference.
Let’s not wait for a warning that may never come.

If everything feels dark today, don’t believe that the darkness you feel now is the rest of your life.

Stay. Speak. Reach out to someone.

And when you need silence,
the ocean is a great friend.

Stone doesn’t defeat water. Water, simply by never stopping, eventually finds its way through stone.
