🎄Christmas in Portugal 🇵🇹 from what I’ve seen living here:
✨ I learned very fast that Christmas here is on the 24th, not the 25th.
The 25th is basically leftovers and naps.
🍲 My first Consoada taught me one thing:
bacalhau will be cooked in 47 different ways and somehow all of them work.
🎁 I heard kids don’t open presents right away… they wait until midnight.
Meanwhile adults pretend they’re not more excited than the kids.
🥘 I noticed dinner never really ends.
You eat, talk, laugh, then someone says “vamos só comer mais um bocadinho” and suddenly it’s round two.
🍰 I discovered rabanadas, sonhos and bolo-rei by watching plates refill themselves without consent.
🎉 On the 24th, the streets are chaos until evening
people running with bread, wine, and that one thing someone forgot.
☕ Cafés close early like: “family time.”
Then reopen on the 25th like nothing happened.
✨ What surprised me most?
Christmas here isn’t loud or showy.
It’s slow, warm, family-first… and somehow that hits harder.
Took me years to get it, now it just feels right 🇵🇹
If you’re new here, welcome.
If you’ve been here a while… you already know 😉 maybe you can introduce me to something new.
