Signal Rex announces Ylistysvirret, the forthcoming new album from Finnish black metal entity ODIOUS DEVOTION, due for release this autumn on CD and vinyl LP.

Formed in Finland in 2018, ODIOUS DEVOTION emerged that same year with their self-titled debut. What followed was Consecration in 2020 and Ilmestys in 2021, three releases that gradually established a sound built from raw black metal, long-form composition, stark melody and ambient passages.

Five years after Ilmestys, ODIOUS DEVOTION now return with Ylistysvirret.

The title translates roughly as "Hymns of Praise", although little here should be understood in any comfortable devotional sense. Across its previous recordings, ODIOUS DEVOTION has worked within the colder and more atmospheric reaches of Finnish black metal without simply reproducing its most familiar forms. Harsh repetition and forward momentum exist beside extended melodic lines and quieter, almost suspended passages, allowing the songs to develop gradually rather than serving as collections of disconnected riffs.

That approach was already evident on the project's earliest recordings, but Ilmestys pushed it considerably further. Released in 2021, the album reduced its structure to four pieces, two of them extending beyond nine minutes, leaving considerably more space for repetition, contrast and slow transformation. Ylistysvirret arrives after the longest silence in ODIOUS DEVOTION's recorded history and begins the next chapter of that progression.

ODIOUS DEVOTION remains the work of V. Pasanen, responsible for guitars, vocals, bass, drums and synthesizers on Ylistysvirret.

Ylistysvirret consists of seven tracks and runs for just over 36 minutes:

Signal Rex announces Ylistys, the forthcoming split release from Finland’s ALKEMISTI and VICTIMARUM, due for release this autumn on CD and vinyl LP.

Two relatively young names within the Finnish black metal underground, ALKEMISTI and VICTIMARUM have nevertheless established distinctly different identities in a short period of time.

Hailing from Helsinki, ALKEMISTI first emerged in 2024 with the three-track demo Ajan ja tilan rajamailla. In 2026, the band returned with Perkeleen Tie, their side of the Teufelspakt - Perkeleen Tie split with Germany’s Totensturm, further developing their “black metal from the depths unknown” across three new tracks.

VICTIMARUM were formed in Turku in 2022 and moved quickly. Their self-released Demo 2023 appeared the following year, soon followed by Tyhjyyden Roviolla, whose second track was a cover of Horna’s “Kuoleva Lupaus”. After the standalone track Tulenkantaja in 2025, VICTIMARUM delivered their debut full-length Seitsemän soihdun valossa through Signal Rex in October of that year.

Now both bands meet on Ylistys.

Rather than simply placing two unrelated recordings beside one another, the split brings together two different expressions of a common tradition. ALKEMISTI approach it through rawness, melody and the obscure atmosphere already present in their earlier material, while VICTIMARUM continue along the colder and more direct path established across their previous recordings.

Originally released as a three-track EP, Avgud is presented here together with an additional track taken from Reyndom’s 2024 single, expanding the release into a complete document of this period of the project.

There is little excess in Reyndom’s music. Avgud is built from repetition, weight and atmosphere, moving through a severe and stripped form of black metal where the coldness comes less from ornament than from restraint. The material feels deliberate and physical, driven by percussion, coarse guitars and voice, while the presence of tagelharpa introduces an older, more archaic texture without turning the record into something nostalgic or folkloric.

The result is austere, ritualistic and deeply grounded, with each element given enough space to remain raw.

This edition brings together all three tracks from Avgud plus one additional track originally released in 2024.

Emerging from the German underground, EYCHENGEYST forge a distinctive audial manifesto shaped not only by the rawness of the genre, but also by the spirit and aesthetics found within other musical geners. Across their three demos, these seemingly disparate influences converge into something stark, melancholic, earthy and deeply rooted in a sense of cultural and spiritual identity. Indeed, at the heart of EYCHENGEYST's lyrical concept lies the spirit of Lebensreform, the 19th century German life-reform movement that advocated a return to nature, simplicity, self-determination and a more authentic way of living, in opposition to the alienation and artificiality brought by modern industrial society.

This philosophy gives their music a particular character. The raw, primitive force of Black Metal meets the austere and defiant attitude historically associated with Oi!, the nocturnal melancholy and cold atmosphere of Dark Wave, and the organic, introspective and nature-oriented sensibilities of Neo Folk. Rather than functioning as straightforward genre exercises, these elements become part of a broader aesthetic centred around nature, solitude, inner freedom, ancestral consciousness and rejection of modern alienation.

SIGNAL REX now gathers all three EYCHENGEYST demos together for the first time on a compilation CD, presenting their complete early output as a single document, three recordings tracing the formation of a singular aesthetic somewhere between raw Black Metal, the shadowy world of Dark Wave, the defiant spirit of Oi!, and the pastoral darkness of Neo Folk.
