🇵🇹 A partir do mês de março, o mar dos Açores transforma-se num verdadeiro corredor migratório para várias espécies de cetáceos. Esta é uma época particularmente especial, em que as águas açorianas se tornam um ponto de passagem obrigatória para algumas das maiores e mais impressionantes criaturas do planeta. Esta época já tivemos o privilégio de avistar três espécies de baleias migratórias: a Baleia Azul (a maior de todas as espécies animais), a Baleia de Bossa e a Baleia-Sardinheira.

🇬🇧 Starting in March, the seas around the Azores become a true migratory corridor for various species of cetaceans. This is a particularly special time, when the Azorean waters turn into a mandatory passage point for some of the largest and most impressive creatures on the planet. This season, we have already had the privilege of spotting three species of migratory whales: the Blue Whale (the largest of all animal species), the Humpback Whale, and the Fin Whale.

🇵🇹Já te perguntaste como é feita a procura de baleias e golfinhos a partir de terra? Vamos dar-te uma ideia! 🧐

Passamos horas a observar o horizonte com binóculos de longo alcance, à procura de sinais que revelem que os animais estão por perto — um sopro de água, uma barbatana a cortar a superfície, uma agitação suspeita ou até um grande splash no meio do mar!

Começamos esta missão cerca de duas horas antes de cada saída para o mar. Consoante o estado do mar e a presença de animais, por vezes avistamo-los rapidamente… outras vezes, é preciso um bocadinho mais de paciência. 😅

Seja como for, damos sempre o nosso melhor para localizar o maior número possível de animais, mantendo contacto constante com a equipa no barco e ajudando a guiá-los até aos melhores avistamentos. Tudo para que a tua experiência no mar seja simplesmente inesquecível! 🐋

🇬🇧 Have you ever wondered how whales and dolphins are spotted from land? Let us give you an idea! 🧐

We spend hours scanning the horizon with high-powered binoculars, looking for signs that animals might be nearby — a spout of water, a fin slicing through the surface, some unusual disturbance, or even a big splash out at sea!

We begin this mission about two hours before each boat trip. Depending on the sea conditions and the presence of animals, sometimes we spot them quickly… other times, a little more patience is needed. 😅

Either way, we always do our very best to locate as many animals as possible, staying in constant contact with the team on the boat and helping to guide them to the best sightings. All so that your experience at sea is truly unforgettable! 🐋

🇵🇹Hoje é o dia mundial do Golfinho! Esta data foi criada em nome dos 1428 golfinhos brutalmente abatidos em 2021 nas ilhas Faroe. O “Grind” é o nome dado à pratica que intitulam de tradição, mas que se torna cada vez mais insustentável devido aos avanços na tecnologia marítima, e que leva à morte de várias centenas de golfinhos todos os anos. A importância de proteger estes animais das consequências da influência humana, nunca esquecendo os que infelizmente sofreram essas mesmas consequências, faz deste dia um pouco agridoce.
Estes seres maravilhosos, fazem os nossos dias valerem a pena quando decidem juntar-se a nós nas nossas viagens, com a sua curiosidade, acrobacias e brincadeiras conseguindo sempre ganhar os corações de quem vai a bordo.

🇬🇧Today is world dolphin day! This date was created in name of the 1428 dolphins brutally slaughtered in 2021 on Faroe islands. The “Grind” is the name given to this practice entitled as tradition, but that becomes more and more unsustainable as marine technology grows, wich leads to the killing of several hundreds of dolphins every year. The importance of protecting these animals against the consequences of human influence, never forgetting the ones that unfortunatly already suffered with them, makes this day a bit bittersweet.
This wonderful beings, that make our days worth it when they decide to join us on our trips, with their curiosity, acrobatic skills and playfullness while winning the hearts of our guests.

🇵🇹 No dia 23 de Julho de 1986, a Comissão Internacional da Baleia criou o Dia Mundial das Baleias e dos Golfinhos para celebrar o fim da sua caça. Este dia serve também para nos relembrar que durante 200 anos estes animais foram caçados das mais cruéis formas em vários países. Infelizmente, hoje em dia alguns países como o Japão, Noruega e Islândia, entre outros, continuam a caçar cetáceos, usando como argumento que esta é uma prática que faz parte da sua cultura. Esperamos ansiosamente pelo dia em que todos os países acabem com a captura e morte de baleias e golfinhos, para podermos realmente celebrar este dia. A saúde do nosso planeta depende também da saúde dos oceanos.

🇬🇧 On the 23rd of July 1986, The International Whaling Commission established World Whale and Dolphin Day to commemorate the end of commercial whaling. This day also reminds us that for 200 years, these animals were cruelly hunted in various countries. Sadly, countries like Japan, Norway, and Iceland persist in hunting cetaceans, using as na argument that it is part of their culture. We look foward to the day when all nations cease the capture and slaughter of whales and dolphins, allowing us to genuinely celebrate this day. Remember that the wellbeing of our planet relies on the health of the oceans.

🇵🇹 Nem sempre a agitação do dia a dia permite-nos vir aqui partilhar alguns dos encontros que temos no mar. Mas sempre que temos um bocadinho fazemos questão de atualizar as nossas redes com as imagens incriveis que tiramos durante as nossas viagens! Hoje tivemos um bocadinho, e o que vão ver aqui é apenas um “cheirinho” dos últimos encontros…
Nas imagens que se seguem vão ver uma mãe e cria de Cachalote a nadarem lado a lado e depois a mergulharem ao mesmo tempo, um golfinho de Risso muito curioso a olhar para nós, uma cria de golfinho Roaz a tentar acompanhar a sua mãe, três Cachalotes a descansarem à superfície, uma tartaruga Comum mesmo antes de mergulhar e para terminar em grande, uma pontinha do Pico visto deste o lado norte de São Jorge!
São momentos como estes que fazem as nossas viagens… e como lidamos com a natureza, não conseguimos prometer que vão ver determinada espécie ou determinado comportamento, apenas conseguimos garantir que a vossa viagem vai ter um ponto alto que ainda está por descobrir… 💙

🇬🇧 Not always the commotion of daily life allows us to come here and share some of the encounters we have at sea. But whenever we have a moment, we make sure to update our networks with incredible images we take during our tours! Today we had a little time, and what you’re going to see here is just a “teaser”...
In the following images, you’ll see a mother and calf S***m whale swimming side by side and then diving at the same time, a curious Risso’s dolphin looking at us, a baby Bottlenose dolphin trying to keep up with its mother, three S***m whales resting on the sea surface, a Loggerhead turtle just before diving and to top it all off, a glimpse of Pico from the northern side of São Jorge!
It’s moments like these that make our trips… and since we’re dealing with nature, we can’t promise you’ll see a specific species or behavior, but we can guarantee that your trip will have a highlight, and thats yet to be discovered… 💙

•🇵🇹 No dia 30 de abril, tivemos um encontro incrível com uma Baleia de Bossa, mas ainda não sabíamos que havia mais para celebrar!
Durante os passeios, a nossa tripulação tira várias fotos a todas as espécies avistadas, procurando especificamente por marcas únicas nas barbatanas dorsais e caudais, já que estas podem funcionar como impressões digitais. Este tipo de fotos ao serem partilhadas com a comunidade cientifica podem ser úteis para encontrar avistamentos do mesmo animal noutras regiões, o que chamamos de “match” e ajudará a entender os seus padrões de migração.
No dia 1 de maio submetemos a nossa foto da barbatana caudal (segunda foto) desta baleia de bossa no site happywhale.com. Neste site qualquer pessoa pode submeter as suas fotos de mamíferos marinhos, cada animal é identificado através das suas marcas e depois comparado com animais identificados anteriormente, de forma a encontrar o tal “match”. Pouco tempo após submeter a nossa foto recebemos boas notícias! Temos um match! Este individuo que avistámos já tinha sido encontrado em Troms na Noruega em 2022! Só conseguimos pensar no quão incríveis e resilientes são estes cetáceos que percorrem milhares de quilómetros todos os anos. Gostaríamos de deixar um agradecimento especial à Happy Whale por todo o trabalho extraordinário e contributo à ciência!

•🇬🇧 On April 30th, we had an amazing encounter with a Humpback Whale, and little did we know that the celebration was far from over.
On every trip, our crew takes pictures of all the species we encounter, especially of specific features on their dorsal and caudal fins, since these act as fingerprints for the animals.

🇵🇹 Que semana incrível tivemos! Nos últimos dias conseguimos aproveitar algumas janelas de bom tempo para procurar os gigantes do mar!
Ontem foi possível encontrar Cachalotes e no início da semana tivemos a companhia de uma enorme Baleia Azul 🐋🤩.
Destaque também para os Golfinhos Comuns que marcaram a sua presença todos os dias 🐬.
Esperamos agora pelo bom tempo, para voltar a procurar por estes animais incríveis 🙌🏻.

🇬🇧 What an incredible week we had! These last few days we took advantage of the few windows of good weather to search for the giants of the sea!
Yesterday we found some S***m whales and earlier this week we had the company of a huge Blue whale 🐋🤩.
Shout out to the Common dolphins that showed up everyday 🐬.
Now we have to wait for the good weather, so we can keep on looking for these incredible animals 🙌🏻.

🇵🇹•Eclipse solar parcial
Ontem, 8 de Abril foi possível avistar desde a Ilha de São Jorge o eclipse solar de forma parcial! Embora as condições durante o dia não foram as melhores, com bastantes nuvens e vento, o entardecer revelou umas cores incríveis com direito a uma faixa no céu que nos permitiu ver a Lua mesmo em frente do Sol. Esperamos o próximo ansiosamente a 14 de Março 2025, que será lunar e total! ☀️🌕

🇬🇧• Partial Solar Eclipse
Yesterday, April 8th it was possible to see from São Jorge Island the eclipse partially! Although weather conditions weren’t great during the day, with a lot of clouds and wind, at dusk we had amazing colors with the privilege of a small strip that allowed us to see the Moon right in front of the Sun. We wait eagerly for the next one on March 14th 2025, which will be lunar and total eclipse in the Azores! ☀️🌕

🇵🇹Hoje celebra se o dia Mundial da Baleia. Este dia serve para relembrar a importância que estes seres carismáticos têm no ecossistema marinho, e não só, como por exemplo na captura de grandes quantidades de CO2 da atmosfera, auxiliando na luta contra as alterações climáticas; como predadores de topo ajudam a regular a cadeia trofica para que não ocorra sobrepopulação de outras espécies; também as suas fezes ajudam a estimular o crescimento de fitoplâncton (que também remove CO2 da atmosfera) e por último são também uma grande contribuição para a economia local através do “Whale Watching”.
Embora o seu papel seja de grande valor, muitas espécies de baleias estão classificadas como vulneráveis devido às ameaças que sofrem como: bycatch (pesca acessória); poluição marinha ou a destruição dos seus habitats.
Nas nossas stories vais poder encontrar formas de ajudar na proteção e conservação das baleias. 🐋
🇬🇧Today we celebrate World Whale Day. This day serves to remind us of the importance that these charismatic beings have in the marine ecosystem, and beyond, such as in capturing large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere, assisting in the fight against climate change; as top predators they help regulate the trophic chain to prevent overpopulation of other species; also their f***s help stimulate the growth of phytoplankton (which also removes CO2 from the atmosphere) and last, they contribute significantly to the local economy through whale watching. Although their role is of great value, many whale species are classified as vulnerable due to threats such as bycatch, marine pollution or habitat destruction.
In our stories you will find ways in which you can help in the protection and conservation of whales.

•🇵🇹 Hoje trazemos-vos o grupo de cetáceos que mais vezes nos surpreendeu, surgindo quando menos esperávamos: as baleias de bico (família Ziphiidae). Pensa-se que esta família seja composta por, pelo menos, 21 espécies, mas no mar dos Açores é possível encontrar seis delas. Devido à sua natureza tímida e comportamento maioritariamente elusivo sabe-se pouco sobre as baleias de bico e por vezes é bastante difícil identificar que espécie estamos a avistar. Contudo, no verão passado conseguimos por duas vezes confirmar que estávamos a ver a Baleia de Bico de Cuvier (Ziphius cavirostris) e a Baleia de bico de Sowerby (Mesoplodon bidens).

•🇬🇧 Today we bring the group of cetaceans that surprised us more, showing up when we least expected it: the beaked whales (family Ziphiidae). This family is composed of at least, 21 species, but in the Azores its possible to find six of them. Due to their shy nature and mostly elusive behaviour, little is known about beaked whales and sometimes its really hard to identify which species we are sighting. Nonetheless, last summer we were actually able to confirm twice that we were looking at the Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) and Sowerby’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon bidens).
