“Prisma” is a monumental installation comprising a labyrinth-like composition of slow-motion video footage recorded in a variety of cities across the globe: Beijing, Cincinnati, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Macao, Mexico City, Paris and Shanghai.
Manipulating and distorting space, scale and light, it is a construction built for immersion, creating an atmosphere that arouses a wide spectrum of reactions and feelings and underlines the complexity of human existence within globalized urban contexts.
Mirroring the effect of an optical prism, it refracts shared experiences into different wavelengths and frequencies devised to be individually absorbed and deciphered. Engaging foreign realities and everyday situations, it confronts the viewer with a contrast between the weight of anonymity and the familiarity of daily life.
Generating an environment that is simultaneously identifiable and anonymous, “Prisma” reflects upon the increasing homogenisation of our societies. It creates conflict between the private nature of introspection and the public dimension of communal existence, while evidencing that both these circumstances have an inescapably common genesis, thus leading to a truly unifying and collective experience.
