maktab–mektep is a summer school on ecocritical architecture and spatial research.
Its first edition will take place in Aktau in June 2026.

Participants will work with a specific urban site, exploring how it can be reimagined in dialogue with local communities. The program combines theory and practice, bringing together:

— the city and architecture as a media environment
— critical perspectives on the architectural profession and its transformation
— the use of traditional crafts in design and construction

The school welcomes senior and graduate students, as well as early-career professionals (ages 20–40) in architecture, art, media, and the humanities and social sciences. Priority is given to applicants from Central Asia; applications from other regions are also welcome.

Application deadline: April 20
Application form available via the school’s bio:

Threads of Support is a poetic documentary film focusing on the historical, social, and cultural contexts of silk production in Marghelan (Uzbekistan), located in the multilayered and complex region of the Ferghana Valley in Central Asia.

It has just been presented at Qumra by the Doha Film Institute. We are grateful to the entire DFI team for connecting us with such an excellent cohort of film experts and connoisseurs: we had 11 mentorship sessions and 17 industry meetings, and we are now looking forward to the film hitting the road and meeting festival audiences.

The film, produced by EastEast, began its journey last weekend as part of the Qumra 2026 Talent Lab at the Doha Film Institute. We met many inspiring people from across the global film industry and look forward to future collaborations.

Threads of Support is a poetic essay celebrating contemporary Uzbek craftspeople and silk production, tracing resilience, memory, and ancestral knowledge preserved in the living traditions of the Fergana Valley—one of Central Asia’s most culturally rich and layered regions.
We are grateful to everyone who supported our project: DFI , Caravane Earth Foundation , Art Station Uzbekistan , the Embassy of Switzerland in Uzbekistan, and the State Silk Museum, Tbilisi, Georgia .
