Amaltash designed by Design ni Dukaan derives its name from the Cassia or the Golden Shower tree that stands at its entrance.

Much like its blossoms, Ithe home's light terracotta walls glow golden under the evening sun. This subtle dialogue between nature and architecture defines the identity of the project.

The project also reflects Design ni Dukaan and its team's larger commitment to sustaining craft and building creative communities.

What does it really mean to call something modern, and who decides? In this conversation, architectural historian Thomas Oommen revisits post-independent Kerala not as a footnote to canonical modernism, but as a landscape with its own logic.

Moving away from familiar narratives, he draws attention to the ordinary, where media, migration, technical education, and everyday building practices quietly shaped a different kind of modern.

Visit our website for a detailed talk on Kerala and its version of post-independence modernism as explained by Oommen.

In a recent update, Qatar Museums has announced the postponement of the Design Doha Biennial 2026. Originally scheduled in April, the event will now open from 5 to 7 November 2026, with exhibitions continuing until 31 December 2026.

The decision, taken in light of the evolving situation in the region, reflects a measured shift rather than a change in intent.

Design Doha Biennial 2026 remains positioned as a platform for designers, artisans, and creative practitioners across the MENASA region.

Qatar Museums emphasised its continued commitment to the participants involved, noting that the postponement allows the biennial to unfold as originally envisioned—a gathering centred on exchange, visibility, and regional dialogue.

From extraction to Art Basel Qatar, a journey that needs to be shared.

From the depths of South Africa’s Cullinan Mine to the polished spaces of Art Basel Qatar, this work by Ângela Ferreira traces a trajectory that is not just geological, but deeply political.

Her installation carries with it histories of colonial extraction, displacement, and unequal value systems.

This is not about the brilliance of diamond alone. It is about what lies beneath it, labour, land, and legacy, that is highlighted.

In Doha, the installation asks us to reconsider what we admire.
Who owns beauty?
Who pays for it?

And can art make way for forgiveness and letting go of the trauma inflicted?

Petti Restaurant in Tuticorin rethinks the use of the shipping container.

Instead of treating the whole process of design as a quick fix, WALLMAKERS with their usual panache and love for innovation, works around the thermal limitations of shipping containers with layered construction and orientation, pairing steel with poured earth to make it viable in the hot climate.

Eid Mubarak dear readers of SCALE.

In a time when the world feels heavy, and peace often seems distant, may this Eid be a gentle reminder of what truly matters. Of compassion that reaches beyond differences, of kindness that refuses to diminish, and of hope that insists on staying.

May we carry the spirit of Eid not only in celebration, but in how we choose to see one another, with dignity, empathy, kindness and care.

May peace find its way, into our homes, our cities, and the places that need it most.
