It has a massive area to find a spot with trees etc for privacy.

We have found 3 perfect free campspots so far on our trip, they are all great and would definitely stay at any one of them again. All in Victoria and on or near a river/stream
First was free camp at Dimboola. It has flushing toilets behind football club rooms, lots of room, all sizes would fit, even area if you travelling with horses, lovely walking trails, and easy walk to the township.
Next is majors creek campground (below Shepparton), long drop loo, large spaces, there are actually 3 or 4 different camping areas, the others were pretty well chopped up due to recent rains and 4x4s.
And pioneer bridges at markwood (below Beechworth) long drop loo, very pretty spot, it is near a road but the road goes very quiet evening and night time, there's fire pits at most sites

Wasn't too busy so that was great, yabbies in the dam, not sure about fish 🐟
There were heaps of fresh water crocs lying on the banks 🐊

We have recently finished the Gibb River Road and were determined to free camp or low cost camp the whole way.

📍May River - beautiful spot on a rocky riverbed about 70km the Derby side of the GRR. We all had a cool off in the shallow clear running water.
📍Lennard River Rest Area - a good base to leave the van and trip into Tunnel Creek and Winjana Gorge.
📍March Fly Glen - loved this shady lush spot! So picturesque! We dropped the van here and day tripped to Bells Gorge. Get in early! This one doesn’t have a lot of room and fills up quick.
📍Manning Falls - not too pricy for one of our only paid camps on the GRR. Plus a beautiful spot for cool swims in the river after your big walk in to Manning. Rope swing fun to be had too!
📍Haan River Crossing - we didn’t stay here but it’s a nice spot for lunch and a swim in the river.
📍Gibb River - This was such a beautiful spot. Everyone chilled out in the river all afternoon. So many spots to camp here on both sides of the river.
📍Ellenbrae Station - We splurged and stayed here after our friends had some car trouble and we loved it here lots of character and good spots to swim at the river with a fun rope swing. Scones are pretty ace too.
📍Pentecost River - again a busy spot so get in early! Lots of crocs here so beware! Dusty but beautiful. Give the Barra fishing a go!
